Hey guys.
Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I really do appreciate it! I got the file posted on my webpage. www.victorwainwright.com
You'll see the links. Two words "Big" and then "Small." Small file is only a third of the song. Big file is the entire song. Just right click on the links and select "save target as" to download the files. I compressed the WAV to MP3 files....figured that way you wouldn't have to wait forever for it to download. Is that ok?
Well any ways, Thanks again guys! Hope you can find some suggestions for me and this mix, and all my future mixes.
Peace,
-Vic Smile

Vic,

Hey man! I like the song! Granted, I'm listening to an mp3 on my little computer speakers at work, but it sounds pretty clean to me!

The vocals do seem slightly hot in the mix... I would actually try pulling everything else up around it... especially drums. It also feels to me like there is a musical "hole" (so to speak) in the lower midrange... Lots of good highs in the piano and horns, great guitar licks, and good bass, but it feels like there's just a little something missing in the middle. This may be some of what is causing your vocals to stand out so much. You might also add a little bit of reverb to pull them back "three dimensionally." Again, take this all with a grain. My speakers here aren't horrible, but they're not my studio monitors by any means.

Altogether, great sound! I'm impressed. I like it

Josh

Hey guys. Thanks for the advice!!! I'll try the reverb and also pulling up the rest of the song a lil'. I'm planning on adding an organ for rhythm to help out with the mid range of the song.

To answer your question about the mic. I'm not sure. The bulk of the song was recorded in "Full Sail" studio/college in ORL FL. Great place, and FREE!!! I did buy the tracks from them however, but after they were recorded, and am hoping to save a few bucks by mixing and mastering the music myself.

If anyone else has any suggestions about how to get the vocals to "sit" better in the song, by all means please reply. I'd appreciate any comments.

Thanks!!!
-Vic:)

I don't have any specific settings to offer, but something to ponder is.... There are a few things (I'm talking the basics here) and will affect how a track sits in the mix. 1) Volume of the track in relation to the other tracks. 2) Dynamics of the track (using compression, "squeezes" the file somewhat) 3) Equalization can be used to "add or subtract" frequencies that are shared by other tracks. Panning or course will help place tracks. 4) Reverb gives a source sound "depth of field" helping to move things forward or back in a mix. Any of the above (or a combination of all of them) will help to "sit" a track in the mix. I listened to your track and was impressed with everything! Of course, I would hope that given the tuition price of Full Sail they wouldn't be turning out anything less. As for the vocal, it does seem a little loud (in spots) which would lead me towards a compressor. Personally, I also think it needs some "depth" and would find a nice Reverb to move it back some. I'm sure others have their suggestions and will weigh in. Nice job!!!! Wink

Thanks dude!
Yeah I've been playing with the reverbs a little. Mostly I've been sticking with the pre-sets. I'm very sparse with verb though cause often I end up with a mix where the vocals are drenched and the song just doesn't sound right. There must be a fine line that I need to get right up next to, but not go over.

Yeah those full sail guys pay a WHOLE lot of tuition. But they are very nice and do care about the product you end up with. The only problem with full sail, is that they don't mix!!! lol. They record you and it sounds great, but the mix they give you is very rough and you really gotta go home and either do it yourself or send it somewhere to get done.

About the compression, I've been using the presets and mostly it seems to just make the track "louder." Does anyone have any favorite copression settings or presets that may help a vocal track "sit" better?

I usually, when I'm playing with multi tracks, take each track, EQ it, normalize it, then compress it.
Once I create a mix with all the tracks, I go back and EQ the final mix slightly if needed, maybe compress it or use a hard-limiter. Am I missing a step here? Or maybe I'm doing things in the wrong order?
Thanks Wink

I think that Organ will really be nice! Just be careful not to crowd the other tracks. Your song is nice and open right now. It would be a shame to overload it, but I don't think you're in much danger of that yet. :)

Very true, as it is with pretty much all things in the mix!

I'm no guru, but FWIW, I generally compress, then EQ, then (if necessary) normalize. If a track is going to sit back in the mix, it very well may not need normalization. In fact, since your tracks were professionally recorded, I would be surprised if they aren't hot enough already.

I compress first to make the volume more manageable (without losing necessary dynamics), but I don't boost it much if at all. This way I don't accidentally cause tracks to clip when I add EQ (which can be compensated for with the output gain setting, but whatever).

Anyway, I hope this is helpful! I look forward to hearing the final product.

Josh

PS: You guys should play in Texas sometime!
