The problem with laptops has never been the processing power, but getting the audio into the computer in the first place. If you had a standard powerfull laptop (800Hz/128 Mb RAM as a starting point) with USB, and then got an external USB soundcard-AD/DA convertor box, that should solve the problem.

Mickol: I know of only one high end laptop soundcard maker. Digigram makes the VXPOCKET. These list for over $700. BSW has them for $500. I've never used one, but I know people who use and like them...

I will be testing a USB interface made by SoundDevices. I intend on writing something up on my experience. On the surface these usb's look like a good deal, especially for the mobile producer.

New to the forum...very interesting. I'm using an Acer laptop, with apretty fast PIII. For remote recording I'm considering a few of the USB input devices. Some offer the feature of sliders and knobs that control key software functions (thru midi??). Will these work with CE Pro? One pre amp I'm considering is the Sound Devices USBPre? Looks like high wuality..no midi. Love Cool Edit and the forum seems great.

Don't know of the U-8. But Roland's UA-30 and UA-100 are very popular and rock solid devices. Ditto with the US-428 (great sounding 24-bit A/D conversion). But as far as knobs and slider functions and them interacting with Cool Edit, that is a no. YOu can map certain functions with MIDI controller numbers, but that's about the extent of it.
