I'm using CEPro with a fairly bog standard sound card (1 1/8" input/full duplex). I'm a musician who has recently dived headlong into the world of digital recording, and thought I was doing well up until this problem. I have a good P.A./Mixer, and I can get everything sounded good individually; i.e. in the waveform view; clear as a bell, no unwanted noise. Yet when I have multiple (5-12) tracks playing in multitrack view, it distorts, when 1 or more tracks increase in volume. I apologise for my vague description, I have yet to learn how to think of sound as a waveform. It seems that the Bass Guitar distorts most, as well as tracks with contant tonal changes, i.e wah.
My own uneducated guess is its either 1.My crappy sound card letting me down 2.My panning/channel mixing is inadequate and I am 'cluttering' the sound somehow 3. I am recording with to much gain(even though my sound card just gives me an option for '+20% gain' which I leave unticked'.
On reflection, if the track sounds perfect on it's own in waveform view, surely option 2 is the most likely ? Just thinking out loud. Any tips/advice/flagrant abuse rewarded with unashamed outpourings of gratitude.
Thanks.

Hi Papillon. Well, you are essentially experiencing what most people do in the beginning stages of multitracking. By default, the master fader in MT mode (upper-left hand corner of screen, in green) defaults at 0db. Consequently, each individual track's fader (volume) is also defaulted at 0db. The best bet is to begin with the master fader at around -8dB, to leave yourself some head room. Mute all your tracks and slowly bring each one up. Just like mixing in analog, you don't want every track's volume to be at -unity- gain, so attenuate each (say, around -10 even) and bring up as needed. If you've got everything where you want it, and the 'sum' is peaking around -8 still, now go back and raise the master a little.

This should solve your problem.
