I have one in the coolpro folder and one in windows. Each has different presets that I have added at various stages. Shouldn't there only be one, and if so, which one should I delete? When I manually paste in presets to hte cool.ini file why don't they show up in CEP when I open the program and the corresponding effect to which I've added a preset in the cool.ini?????????

Hello Sean. It depends on which operating system you are using, and which version of Cool Edit that you are running. Prior to CEP version 1.2a, the cool.ini was located in the Windows folder. Once you update to 1.2a, however, the cool.ini becomes part of the Coolpro folder. Also, if you had previously installed demos of CE2K or Pro, there may even be other cool.ini's.

With OSs (like Win2K) there are other places where cool.ini files get copied...so there's really a lot of factors involved. Let us know which OS and which version of CEP you are using...it would appear that you're using 1.2a, in which case, the cool.ini in C:\coolpro is the active one.

I started out with windows 95 and the first version of CEP on CD-ROM. So that explains why it is in hte windows folder. After the updates I guess is when my .ini file was put into the coolpro folder. I run windows 98 now too. So I can simply just delete my windows cool.ini file?

This still doesn't explain why I manually paste preset text into the .ini file with the appropiate item number in order yet it still doesn't show up in the programs presets?????

Hi Sean. Well, yes, if you're in 1.2a running Win98, you realy only need the cool.ini that is in the C:\coolpro folder. Just to be safe, remove the one from the windows directory and rename it something like coolbak.ini, and place it in some other folder. Try running the program and see if your presets are still showing up. If so, then you're good to go...if not, replace the coolbak.ini into the Windows folder and rename it accordingly. It could be that you made changes to one or the other and now cool edit is trying to pull info from both. But you should only need the one cool.ini that's in C:\coolpro.

Hmmm.. I've successfully eliminated the .ini file in Windows with no problem. I guess all of my presets are in the cooplro .ini file. Other Old problem still present: Why are presets typed manually in the cool.ini file still not showing up in the program? I've have been careful to make sure the item number is in the proper order. Plus the .ini file has several blank item numbers. Why?

When you manually type in presets into the
cool.ini file, you should have no instance of
Cool Edit running at the time. Then, when you bring up Cool Edit, it should pick up the new presets. Blank lines indicate presets that once were there and were deleted by the user in Cool Edit.

Okay, I still don't understand why these presets aren't showing up so here is the portion of my .ini file for parametric eq presets. The last two in the list do not show up in the parametric eq preset list when I open CEP. Can anyone figure out why?

You got these presets off the presets exchange, right? These presets contain *typos* that will prevent them from being recognized by Cool Edit. Take a look at the "I" in "RIAA". Now look closely at the "I" in "Item 18", the "I" in "Inverse" and the "1" in "-19.5". These are not "I"s or "1"s. Replace these last two presets with the following:

Item18=RIAA Inverse,3,1,50.145,-10,20096,19.5,1,1,0,0,0,500.4,2200.2,800,3200,12800,1,1,2,2,2,0,0,0,0,0,0
Item19=RIAA,3,11,50.145,10,20096,-19.5,1,1,0,0,0,500.4,2200.2,800,3200,12800,1,1,2,2,2,0,0,0,0,0,0

Also, people have had trouble running scripts that are on the preset exchange (something gets garbled in transmission).
You'll notice that the preset exchange hasn't been updated in quite some time. I
have long since given up on sending things there to be posted because
this method of sharing presets and scripts is not very reliable.

When Cool Edit comes out with a new and improved version of a function such as the click/pop eliminator, it may have additional
parameters for presets representing the new functionality. I believe the "Version=1" thing is some kind of delimiter, the idea being that presets that occur prior to the version line are old-style presets for the function, and presets that have been added in the new version of Cool Edit (through the user interface) are new-style presets, with a different number of parameters. I'm not sure if there is any actual use of the "Version=1" line or not. I think maybe it's there to aid Cool Edit in preserving your existing presets when you install or reinstall Cool Edit. Bottom line is, don't worry about it.
