HI! I'm looking for a voice compression effect for Radio Imaging that will give my voice a Ballsy grumble. I have nice depth, but not natural grumble without putting it on. Maybe some EQ and compression settings together? Also, that phone filter effect most VO guys are using....Please help me.

Rick, I am chasing the same compression effect. For the phone thing, click on transform, then fft filter, then "get off the phone". This should give you the phone fx your after. however be warned it is pretty muddy. You will need to clean it up a little through the manipulative line thingy!

Hey Rick. regarding the compression settings, it all depends on (a) the source of your program; and (b) what levels of limiting you apply during broadcast. Typically, one of the presets in the Transform>Amplitude>Dynamics menu (like 2:1 Compressor, 3:1) will give you some nice boost in level, as well as an 'even tone'. You can then apply some EQ to phatten your voice. A lot of radio guys like to boost (with fairly narrow bands) at around 60-80hz and even 125-150. Be careful not to apply too much, but this will truly give you some 'bassy' edge (assuming, you've got some to start out with :-) )
Other than that, you can also give yourself some presence by tweaking rough 2.2Khz and 7-9k. If you find that you are making yourself 'sibilant' you can cut (with very narrow bands) at 5.8k/6.3k.
I wouldn't go with much more than a 3:1 compression ratio, since after broadcast (and assuming you've got some serious limiting) your signal might 'pump' a little more than desired. Of course, you might want that....!
Good luck.

I'm using the following procedure:
Amplify - Dynamics Processor - "Voice compression (great!)". Then I do a Amplify - Hard Limiting with a "Limit output to -1 dB" setting.
First, the voice may go over 0 dB, and sound a little distorted, but then the Hard Limiting will drop it - and make almost a flat line! - at -1 dB. It's just that full, bass sound

Here are my settings for the "alt.rock filtered voice" effect.
1 - FFT filter. Go to "get off the phone" and grab the 3520 point and move it all the way to the right.
2 - Phaser. Enter these numbers going down ... -15 /1760 / 3 / 7. For the time value, highlight your voice wave and find the length of it. Insert that as the time value so that you have one wave of phasing gradually sweeping through your voice line. The last values to enter are 90 degrees / sinusoidal / log frequency / and band pass.
3. Full reverb. Go to "small club" and make the following changes. In early reflections change the HiPass to 20 Hz. In mix change oringinal to 77.1, ER to 11.8, and reverb to 6.9.
4. Add a touch of light compression if needed, something around 2:1 @ -10db, and then amplify or normalize if you want.
As for the ballsy grumble, if you don't have it already, you'll never get it just by adding EQ and compression. The best tone always starts before the sound hits the mic.

Craig- Are you talking about "sweeping phaser?"...Also, could you send some nice, cool, Canadian air down to Michigan?
Thanks

Sorry Tomcat, there isn't any cool Canadian air to be had today from southern Ontario; everywhere is at 34c plus (95f). Craig is in the Ottawa area, I believe, which is probably Easterly from you. It's quite a bit cooler above Lake Superior (22c or 72f in Thunder Bay) so a North wind would be what you are looking for...

Yes, sweeping phaser. It is the only kind of phaser in the program. And if I had any cool Canadian air, I'd keep it ... damn it's hot! 37 degrees (100 deg. F) in Toronto yesterday, 35 here, plus 90% humidity.
