Hi.  I do a mixdown of two tracks in Cool Edit 2.1 and it takes 1 minute 20 seconds.

I do a mixdown of the same two tracks in Au3 and it takes 1 minute 50 seconds.

Is this cuz Au's inherently slower at this sort of thing, or because Au's slower at this sort of thing *on my machine*?

Or because the Mixdown in AA3 is doing something slightly different and includes more processing/different busses and master tracks etc.?

This seems to be yet another observation that AA3 is slower in processing than CEP or AA1.5. There are more reports on (slow) AA3 performance in the Adobe Audition forums.

But on the other hand I have found AA3 to be a lot quicker processing some effects!

WWW

Converting a 2 trk mix 96kHz 32 bits to 44.1kHz 16bits is quicker in AA 3.0 than AA 1.5.

Conversion using highest quality setting: 100.

Yes, the algorithm has changed again.  It's one of many things that have been "freshened" and better optimized in AA3.  But if you want drop-dead unbeatable accuracy and terrible efficiency, the sample rate conversion in CEP2.1 is unbeaten, though the sonic benefits are unproven.
