One more word to-the-wise (for the uninitiated flock with Patchmix). This may be stating the obvious, however.
If you're new to Patchmix and having a devil of a time getting stereo results (with Audition 3 in my case), you should pay particular attention to the mono L and mono R inputs in Patchmix and be sure to set your Pan L and Pan R controls to -90 and +90, respectively. I went round and round with the supplied presets, until I closely inspected the interface.
The only other thing I've noticed is a slight screen "jump" in Audition 3, possibly as a result of the interaction with the ASIO driver. Other than that, this thread is closed!
Thanks again to everyone for offering some great advice along the way, and for those who celebrate, Happy Thanksgiving!

Push to find an answer on the converters that each unit uses. The 192k sample rate is not going to do you any good, so no sense in paying for it. Balanced I/O is better, but if you had no problem before, then there's nothing to fix. So the question is whether the conversion at the sample rate you really use is better or not. My educated guess is that it won't be a noticable difference.
thanks
