Audition 1.5 & EMU Patchmix
This is hopefully a helpful "how to" on using Audition 1.5 (and I am guessing earlier versions of AA and CEP) with EMU’s Patchmix DSP virtual mixer.
As many of us know, Audition 1.5 does not use ASIO. However, Patchmix can be used effectively with Audition, once you have set up a proper Patchmix session (profile) to route your audio into Audition. You are still limited to two channels' input to Audition, thanks to the limitations of Windows AND EMU’s WDM drivers.
Please note: This is the profile that I use with my EMU 1820m system for recording with Audition. This should also work with the 1820 for sure, as it also has the breakout box for I/O. I am theorizing that this approach will work with the 1212m and 0404 systems, as we use the same core Patchmix software, and one could potentially use one of the analog outputs for monitoring purposes.
FIRST:
In Audition, make sure that you have selected E-DSP Wave for Wave In and Wave Out (in Options -> Device Properties)
NEXT (In Patchmix):
1. To record with Audition without monitoring with Patchmix:
This will be a good approach if you have an external mixer, and are just using your card to get the audio into your computer.
Insert a send to “Host Wave L/R” in the “Main Inserts” column (next to the Main Mix meters). This will transfer anything going on in Patchmix to the Windows Wave handling, and get it where Audition can receive it.
2. To record with Audition and monitor your mix with the Patchmix software:
For each input you want to record, create a PRE-fader mixer strip. Once this is done, Make sure that your WAVE 1/2 input is a pre-fader strip along with everything else. This will give you the ability to monitor your mix whilst adding new tracks to the project.
Mute each of those pre-fader strips.
On the Aux 1 and Aux 2 busses, insert sends to route your audio to the Wave handler AND your headphones (speakers), respectively. I use Aux 1 to route the audio to Host Wave L/R and Aux 2 to route the audio to Headphone/Dock.
[When adding a new track to your mix, make sure that you turn down the send feeding Wave L/R on the strip(s) you are mixing. You will be able to monitor the complete mix because the Wave 1/2 Input strip (muted) will feed your headphones or other monitor – but avoid the “Track 1 records to Track 2” issue.]
I assume that these instructions will work with the 1212m and 0404 systems, except you would route to one of the analog/physical outs on the card for your monitor – but I haven’t tried it, or spoken to anyone who has.
Hope this is of assistance to any EMU users who are having trouble getting their card(s) to work with Audition.
If there are other EMU users who can improve on this, please speak up! There is a discussion thread for that purpose at this link.
