Could some kind sole point me in the direction of the thread (either here or on the Adobe forum) dealing with sorting out the problem of accidently creating a silly file type. In this instance a .wav file was saved with .25 in the name and this now appears as a PCM file type in the drop down list.

Rest assured that I haven't done it myself but someone else has asked me the question and I can't find the thread  huh

not sure what your trying to do here
here are two possible answers
goto the file that was saved as a .25 and change the .25 to .wav
a warning will come up saying something about ghanging the extention just click yes
and the file will change back
#2 if you mean that in the drop down for "save as" there is a file type you can save as a .25
you have to go in to folder options and edit or delete it

I've had this happen.

Close AA, and then find any .wav file.  Right-click on it, and select "Open With", then "Choose Program To Open With".  Scroll to AA and highlight, and make sure you check the box that says "Always Use This Program To Open Files Of This Type"... then click on "OK"...

This should "reset" AA.
