I've recently discovered the plethora of great free VST plug-ins out there (thanks "Building the Pod") and have installed several... after 'Refreshing the Effects List" several appear under "Unsupported" and are always grayed out, whether I'm on the Edit View or in the Effects Rack. Is there a step I'm missing?

Not necessarily.  I have the same thing, a certain number of plugins which appear on the 'unsupported' list.  I've always assumed it was because they are not complying fully with the VST/DX specifications.  Of course, VSTi's are not supported anyway.
