Cool Edit wont run any more

G'day,
I'm a newby to the forum but a long time Cool Edit 2000 user.

My problem is that the software won't run anymore, for no apparent reason.  

All I get is the error: "The system has not been configured correctly to run Cool Edit. Please run Setup again."

Needless to say I've tried Setup, with and without uninstalling.  I've searched for and removed any renegade setup files and registry settings to no avail.

Similar things have happened in the past, generally as a result of running low on disk space because it doesn't clean up its /temp files.  Previously reinstalling has cleared the problem, but not this time.

As I understand it, Adobe don't support this software any more.

Any suggestions?  I'm suffering withdrawl symptoms.

OK I think I've followed all the advice I could find but still doesn't work.

I uninstalled.

I searched the hard drive directories (with hidden and system ones shown) for anything with sytrillium, cool, ce2k or ce2000 in the name and deleted anything that looked remotely relevant.

I then manually searched and removed any similar entry from the registry.

I then re-booted and scanned both the file system and registry again.

I then copied ce2kmain from backup to the temp folder and ran it.

It goes through the full install process, then says I've been using it for more than 6 hours and offers me selected functionality or "buy now".

Whichever I select the same "system has not been configured correctly" error comes up.

Any ideas anyone?

ps. I think the universe is trying to tell me something.  My tape deck (from which I'm transferring music) broke on the same day.

I think that the fact that you've had it installed before is coded, and not obvious at all in the registry.

Have you attempted to re-run the registration package? You can only get the software to behave normally if you run ce2kreg.exe with a valid registration code - there's no way around this. It's only some of the plugins that you can register from within the program itself.

I've run ce2kreg.exe and supplied the necessary.  Still same error.

I've tried uninstalling the only plugin I have (Audio cleanup) and then re-registering.

Re-formatting the disk is starting to look good.

I've reviewed that thread, but can't see anything there thats different from the process I described above unless I'm missing something.

My plan now is to repeat the process on the chance that maybe I missed a file or registry setting.  

I wonder is it possible that there is a conflict with another app's registry setting or something?

Anyway in the meantime I've been on methodone with Audacity.  It's slow as anything, difficult to use (no snapping to cues for example) and creates heaps of temp files (over 4,000 in a recent session, each at 1Mb).

Stuart - Disappointed none of that helped. Am pretty sure that everyone with this problem got there in the end via this forum. Presume you tried "Fleasomes" notes -
just in case -
1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel (Windows 2000) or Start > Control Panel (Windows XP).
2. Choose Tools > Folder Options and click the View tab.
3. Make sure that Hide Protected Operating System Files is deselected.
4. Select Show hidden files and Folders.
5. Uninstall Cool Edit Pro or Cool Edit 2000.
6. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:/Documents and Settings/[user]/Application Data.
7. Delete the Syntrillium folder, if one exists.
8. Reinstall Cool Edit Pro or Cool Edit 2000.
9. Follow steps 1-3 to reselect Hide Protected Operating System Files.

When you get this sorted, the crucial thing to remember is that the most common cause when running CE2000 under XP is inadvertantly starting CE2k twice - either by 4 clicks on the icon or by not knowing that the first double click has worked and trying again.

The line I left out was the one about uninstalling the prog via the Windows Uninstaller, which I clearly should have included - otherwise the hidden registry entries don't get removed.

Ha ha - thought it was some fab new plugin I'd never heard of.....!!
