What Is A Broadcast Wave?

Except when you were studying Noise Control, they weren't expecting you to apply it to forum moderation, were they? Just how long have forums existed, anyway?
The Romans certainly had them - and I believe that they may have been
even
noisier than ours!
Actually, the Romans
knew
a thing or two about sound distribution...
(and I split the interesting offshoot of this thread into OT)

Hi Steve. It might be nice if the part where you wrote, "and I split the interesting offshoot of this thread into OT", was a link, shooting you over to the spin-off. Maybe. And in future splits........

So let me get this right... if I move a thread, you
don't
want a shadow topic left on the old forum, but if I split a thread, you
do
want a link to the split? Since both actions will result in a new thread that will show up in 'view posts since last visit', what's the difference?

Well,
moving
a thread in it's entirety doesn't present the same situation as
splitting
a thread, where you're reading it, and then to continue reading it you need to track down the rest of it.
I don't
use
the view posts since last visit feature. I have a tendency to hit the "back" button, instead of navigating forward out of threads, which leaves them marked as unread. Stupid habit. But there I am.... I'm sure I've mentioned that before, but in any case, you can't assume this is how everybody gets around. I'm not saying you are, I'm just.....
So, yeah. If you
move
a thread I don't see any reason to leave skid marks behind, but if you
split
one, a link at the point of separation seems like it might be handy....I mean, you're already saying the words, just turn them blue. I'm not proposing any real change here, I'm just saying it would make it a little smoother to continue reading a thread. despite it's change in direction, if someone so wished.
The only reason I bring it up is that I read this thread for the first time last night, and when I got to the split, it occurred to me that a link would be.......well, you know.

I understand what you're saying - but my take on splitting threads is simply this: I wouldn't actually bother to split one if there was any common ground
at all
between what happened before and after the split point. And that's rare. In fact, I haven't ever come across another example that's as clear-cut as this one. And I did leave a big clue in the split thread's title, so it's
dead
easy to spot in OT.
But if I remember, I will do it. I just don't think it's going to happen very often, so I
might
forget!
