Hi guys,
This is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway and hope not to disturb too many souls .. I'm looking for sources to obtain sound effects/stagers for radio ID/jingle production. The ones I currently have are of extremely bad quality and the cds (all 3 of em) are scratched a bit due to misuse on the part of my predecessor. I'm going for a complete overhall of the current format, so lots of beeps and fuzzy digital noises is probably the best way to describe what i'm in need of! Some beds for news, sport etc are another important.. There does seem to be a large collection on the internet, but I'm a bit dubious about some the quality and even the variety offered.

I know it's probably a dumb, sorry IS a dumb question, but help here would really be appreciated.

From one drowning in a a sea of trust!
Thanks,
C.J

Then have them professionally repaired!

Of course, I'd have to add one caveat:
That what Graeme suggests is certainly possible as long as the top (label) side of the CDs aren't scratched.....

You haven't mentioned how much money you have to invest in a new library...which I assume means it's little or none (and boy do I know the feeling). If you have a small budget, check out Dan O'Day's website at http://danoday.com/. He's got several CD collections of the kind of stuff you're looking for in the $100-$200 price range. They're pretty cheap, but some of it is a bit dated in sound and style.

Click on Catalogue of Radio Goodies, then select Production from the menu on the left side of the screen. Discs you might be interested include Lazer Impact, Cheap Radio Thrills, Power Parts, Zings Zaps & Doo-Dads, among others.

If you're seeking free stuff, well...good luck. I've done some searching for this type of thing myself and haven't had much luck finding anything decent. All you can do is pick your favorite search engine and start digging...maybe you'll find something you can use, somewhere, but I doubt that it will amount to more than one piece here and another there. In my opinion, you'll save yourself a ton of time and end up with a far superior product if you can buy some commercial discs somewhere, anywhere. You can, however, get some decent free music beds at http://www.freeplaymusic.com/

And no, I don't work for Dan O'Day.

Evening gents,
Sincere thanks for the replies. Unfortunately repairing CDs isn't an option and the fact that we're not speaking in private here sustains me from explaining why. All the same, idea is appreciated and has been secretly shelved!
Thanks very much nhaukap for the invaluable help.. definitely right about those virtually non-existant budgets! A price range of between $150 to $300 is currently the pigsback. The links are greatly appreciated. I've been looking for the web freebies as you mentioned - not good!!

Thanks again guys..
C.J.

i have created tons of sound effects, lasers, sweeps, etc from television shows, movies, commercials. gunfire, car crashes, laughter, animal sounds as well as the sweeps and lasers you can grab from cartoons. after you capture the audio, import it to CEP and you can further alter/change the ambience of whatever you captured. depending on your set up, you can capture the audio from the source (tv, dvd, radio) right to cep.

a good source for music beds are the many musicians and bands right in your area. in hartford (where i work) there are thousands of rock, blues, country, metal artists. when a band asks me how they can get their music on the radio, i say 'record some me some beds'. most bands/musicians have fairly decent recording equipment and/or access to a local studio, and are more than willing to record 3 or 4 tracks for me. plus, it gives the band a chance to create some music without having to worry about their singer!

good luck.

Here's another link you might find useful, Gog...Sound Ideas is having a "sale" on their 5-disc imaging elements library, now for $200. I haven't used this library personally, but there's an online sample.

http://www.sound-ideas.com/mix8.html

While you're there, have a look at http://www.sound-ideas.com/impacteffects2.html , and check their Imaging Elements section - they have some other libraries on sale too at pretty good prices. (I may just pick up some of their music libraries for myself - the 24 disc Signature Collection is a relative bargain at $400, and so is the Turner collection at $200.) --- But act quick, the sale prices end January 10.

And Beef Stew's point is a great one...with a little time and proficiency in CEP, you can create custom sound elements using bits and pieces of other pieces of audio.

Years back, I subscribed to Recording magazine. For about 2 years, I also subscribed to their "Playback" CD. It was a monthly publication and was filled with all kinds of things from... mic/hardware clinics to critiqueing (sp?) reader's submissions etc. I have on occasion, used "samples" off those disc for various things.

Yeah, it definitely pays to be resourceful when it comes to stuff like this. The problem with regard to producing stuff for radio is the fine print that usually accompanies these types of instructional and demo discs and such: Copyrighted material. Not for commercial or broadcast use

This is true! However, most of what I used off the "Recording mag CD's" was drum hits from various drum/mic clinics. I would find a kick, snare and hi-hat that I liked and go to town creating my own kits and beats. It was easier than "programming" my SR16 and sounded a whole lot better. I never used any "full production" things off the disc's.

Hi gog.

Sound effects withstanding, if you're looking to create an array of music beds (in a variety of styles), look no further than www.loopology.com

All of our loops are free, and more importantly, royalty-free, which makes them ideal for radio use. You'll need CEP2, of course. :)
