Now, post, I gotta raz you a little... how does Celtic music get grouped with Bach? That's like putting Riverdance in with the monks at the monastary... on second thought, no, they would be choral. Celtic should go with world music and choral as part of classical, IMHO. May I start a poll on how things should be grouped?

I guess that folk is "other". Blue Grass is "Country Western" and Gospel is probably best under "Choral".

Wow, so far only 14% of the people here actually listen to music... That's pathetic.

I am currently envisioning one of those gigantic mega-sized pigeon condominiums. I can't vote on this! I like Travis Shredd and his country metal rap records. Or Barney Barnwell doing Ozzy Osbourne doing Sweet Leaf to segue into the Osbourne Family doing Smokey Mountain Top or whatever.......They's both from Birmingham, right? Why, that Ozzy must be a brother of them there Osborns. Where do I check for that?

That's too funny, Mr. Post78. We need to do a poll on how many people that post in here actually ever fire up CEP in between their long-winded underfunded dilletante dabbler wannabe driveling posts. Hmm, I'm now whistling and looking away. Yes dammit I do use CEP! and even do stuff with it! I practice it. This is my school. Any of you "how do I get that fat loud pro sound out of my mom's computer" posters, you made it to school, but remember to do your homework too!

Woah I better shut up--Tongue the colors the colors wow man

OK I voted. I decided that Nordic astral space music is the musik de jour tonight and I figure it must fall under the rubric of "expirimental," so there's one for expirimental. You said we have to decide on one and only one, right? Why is trip-hop seperate from trance and why are they both seperated from disco? Help--I'm confused. What about black death doom thrash grindcore metal? I feel like Sybil now.

"only 14% of the people here actually listen to music... That's pathetic."

Well Jeremiah, you kinda tied everyone's hands with the "only having one choice" thing. I kinda figure most folks (including yourself) are like myself (I don't consider this unique) in that I honestly listen to everything! I will admit, (not openly) there are maybe 1 or 2 styles that I'm not crazy about... I have listened to them, but I don't buy CD's of those genre's and don't dial them up on the radio. I did vote for "rock", because I felt that title covered a more broader spectrum of music (soft rock, pop rock, acid rock, hard rock, etc). Sorry dude!

Since folk is under other and your taste of electronic is not mine and for me classical is anything but choral, Other it is. Hope that's clear.

Well, there's only one "electronic" up there, what's there to disagree on? I agree that choral doesn't belong under "classical", but it was a suggested change. Hope that's clear.

Voodoo: I agree with you, but the point is to make a decision which wasn't easy for me either. Wink

I just realized (after voting) that I should have voted for World music since I listen to a lot of Finnish music. So from your point of view it's World music. But then again American music would seem World music to me. Hmm... But I do like The Gathering from Netherlands a lot. I guess I'll have to think about this a bit...

No, I'm positive, it's not World music. No, wait... But if I would... Dang. I'm glad I voted for Metal. But I don't like Finnish metal bands... Ummm.
I'd say the answer is possibly maybe. But it might not be.
Do I like Metal? The answer is interesting if true. The Simpson's you gotta love The Simpson's

I agree about the world music, but it was suggested that I put it in there, so there it is. I guess that "world music" could just be music that is only big in a specific place. So, I guess that Reggae and Disco also belong there...

Oh well.

I was joking. I've been on a creative writing course half the day. I got kinda stuck on gear. Although it seem the fatigue is starting to have effect. That was a really bad joke. Clown

catagorizing music has always seemed strange to me. I like alot of the instrumental/fingerstyle acoustic guitar performers. I have found these style players in folk, new age, world, acoustic jazz.... just to name a few. Smile

I agree with you on that. I've always been a fan of good female singers. So now I'm listening to The Gathering (could be psychedelic hard/gothic rock), Alison Krauss (O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack gospel and blues), Stina Nordenstam (I've no idea) and Sarah Brightman (she can sing anything). But now and then to let off steam Brutal Truth and Carcass (technical grindcore).

Just for kicks and to get a perspective on the value of sampling (people, not audio) and participation, go to the Cool Edit forum, go down several pages and note the number of replies in relation to the number of reads. The general trend is that the replies will be roughly 8% to 15% of the number of reads. Now, i can see that happening in a discussion forum, but i do also wonder, like you, why more people don't particiate in a forum poll. It requires writing no essays nor revealing how little you really understand, like a techincal forum might. -- QuestionBig GrinQuestion

Where is R&B/Soul (classic or contemporary)? Rap/hip isn't the same thing.

Yeah, I know... My list sucks. :(

I personally consider R&B as "blues", and what many others consider R&B I actually consider "pop". I just kinda figured that between the two, one of them would work.

My mistake. Big Grin

You can even break down soul further into Hard/Deep Soul like Otis Clay, O.V. Wright, Syl Johnson and just about anyone who recorded on the HI label. Wink

Stax/Volt definitely deserves recognition here, but there should be no denying Memphis based Hi Records, (producer Willie Mitchell), or Muscle Shoals based Cotillion, (producer Rick Hall) which was a subsidiary of Atlantic records. It should also be noted that "The Crack" studio band at the time were made up of 3 brothers... Teenie Hodges on guitar, Leroy Hodges on bass, Charles Hodges on organ and Drummer Howard Grimes. Hi also produced Al Green, Willie Mitchell (yes, producer and performer), Don Bryant, Ann Peebles, Emma Coffee, Spencer Wiggins, George Jackson, Pervis Spann..... whoa.... now your taking me way back!!! Approve

Voodo,

Yeah, I know and grew up with all of that, but I always considered the Hi Records Memphis sound to be smooth. I guess I consider soul to be gritty, like Bobby Womack, Sam & Dave, and Wilson Pickett.

Polls are a bit like mail shots - the takeup is relatively small.

The real point point - already raised with respect to this particular poll - is that single answer questions are so much more difficult to give.

This particular type of poll (which music do you listen to) most certainly does not lend itself to a single answer, probably for most people. I certainly haven't given my answer - simply because there isn't a box for me to tick.

Given that a multiple choice poll is technically not possible, had post78 included a box called "a combination of the above" then my guess is that it would have been almost a 100% response for that category.

And that's exactly why I didn't. I wanted to see the responses when given only one choice. Actually, if there were the option to select multiple boxes, I think I still would have done it this way. Of course, since there are a limited amount of choices I could create, my list pretty much sucks.

Don't be so hard on yourself Post. Sure, your choices did suck Tongue , but it's not your fault! It was that deadgum Web Designer that tied your hands by limiting the amount of choices! Cool
