Does anyone know a way of applying "overshoot compensation" to a finished show. We pre-record our radio shows using CE2000 using a variety of multi-band studio gear. We then attempt to get the loudest sound possible after recording by amplifying above 0dB, then normalizing back to 0dB. Obviously this does cause some occasional clipping - although not audible. Overshoot compensation apparently "alters" the peaks of waves, resulting in a "sizzly" top end, mainly on vocals and some treble peaks that leak through our limiters. Does Cool Edit 2000 or Cool Edit Pro have a facility for this ? Look forward to hearing your comments, ideas, suggestions. STEVE.

Though I can't comment directly on 'overshoot compensation', I can tell you that the Hard Limiter (part of the Tweakin' Toys plugin for CE2K) is a digital ceiling limiter that will allow you to push the loudness *without* clipping.

The benefits of using a Hard Limiter can really be found when working in 32-bit. The same goes for your previous method (mixing over 0dB then downward normalizing). As long as you're in 32-bit, you can go above 0dB, add a little EQ (ie, around 12-14k would probably do nicely for some added shimmer) and then run the Hard limiter with a boost of 6-8dB, limiting the max amplitude to -.3dB. This will leave just enough headroom so that when you convert to 16-bit (for CD) you'll be good to go.

Thanks. Have tried it using the demo and it produces almost identical results to that of upward amplifying and downward normalizing. There were, however, a few peaks that exceeded 0dB, so I still had to normalize before moving on. It's a handy tool though.
