I know that many of you have to teach new radio employees the basics of cool edit pro/2k. How many of you would be interested in some step by step instructions of how to do basic editing, fading music beds and other essential tasks for radio employees. These are easy for anyone to understand and will save you the time of babysitting the new employee while he or she learns. You could print them and let them start learning. The directions would come with graphics and not be too techinal. If enough people are interested I will put then on a server. also, If you are interested......What format should they be? MS word, Word Perfect, or on a website. It would be a great time saver for busy program and production directors. Thanks for your time.

This is a briiliant idea. I'm involved with church media training and have long realised that something like this is needed. Simple terms and no jargon without explanation. If you have time to do it it will have greater benefit than for just us broadcasters.
I would suggest that as well as web based files a pdf download would also be useful.
Hope you can find time to do it.

I am currenty preparing the website. It has a screen shots of steps and basic terms. I know that it will be avaliable on webpages and in ms word format. I will probably put it in pdf since you suggested it. Its taking a little while because in assuming the dumbest person in the world is learning from the lessons. If anyone has suggestions about lesson topics post them. Currenty I'm working on !(1) Producing a basic music bed from a cd track, (2)Editing words and phrases,(3) cutting and pasting,(4) adding effects to vocal tracks.(5)using the multitrack function, and (6)removing hiss from vocal tracks and recordings.

Here is the 1st lesson. It is a walkthrough of fading a basic music bed. Give me some feedback and tell me is its too simple or too technical. This is still in the beginning stages, so give me some feedback. http://www.timelinecenter.com

Here is the second walkthrough. It deals with adding effects to vocal tracks. http://www.timelinecenter.com I hope that it is simple enough. It has 15 screen shots and seems to be pretty basic. If you do lesson 1 until you are good at it. This second one should be fairly simple. Thanks to the people who have e-mailed me and encouraged my work. Feel free to post any ideas for the lessons here. Thanks for your time.

Great Idea. I think there are some tutorials available here on Syntrllium or elsewhere.
Maybe even a video?

I think the knowledge base and this forum are great too.

I just learned from another string about the bright green line at the top of a wave envelope that fades the volume in multi track. I never saw it because it runs along the top.

Radio people are so overworked that it is hard to take the time to teach new things or old things to new people.

Keep up the good work.

I'm planning to make about 15 single track lessons and then move to multitrack. I plan to cover panning & volume envelopes and other basic lessons. If anyone else has lesson topics they would like covered, please feel free to add them to this post. I want to make sure we build on the previous lessons as we go. I will try to keep the steps as simple as possible.

Here is the 3rd basic lesson it covers "cutting and pasting" waveforms. http://www.timelinecenter.com The first part of the lesson has the basic instructions for recording sound like lesson 2. If you have experence recording sound or have mastered the first two lessons, then skip to step 6. The lesson has 14 screenshots and is very basic. I hope it helps some of the beginners. Please post your comments about this lesson and any suggestion for any others. Thanks for your time. Radiokenny.

This link should have posted first. Here is the 4th basic lesson it covers "cutting" waveforms only. I accidentally posted cutting and pasting before I posted cutting only. Sorry for the mistake. Here is the lesson. http://www.timelinecenter.com The first part of the lesson has the basic instructions for recording sound like lesson 2. If you have experence recording sound or have mastered the first two lessons, then skip to step 6. The lesson has 14 screenshots and is very basic. I hope it helps some of the beginners. Great idea, RadioKenny!! I am learning to use CE2K for basic audio editing. I'm making jingles, spoken word recordings and I really needed to see something like this. I was feeling a bit embarrassed because the info I needed seemed so basic relative to the conversations on these (excellent!!!) forums.

Please keep this up! And hey, the learning curve is steep so don't be afraid to move the pace right along!!

Nice one!!

Excellent !!! Im going to hurry the pace of the lessons and try to do 1 lesson every 2 days. I decided to link them all at one website instead of adding a new link every time I finish a new lesson. You can see all of the lessons at http://www.timelinecenter.com That way you dont have to come to the forum each time you want to check for a new lesson. I will just post the subject of each new lesson in this topic each time a new one is finished. The above url is also easier for employes to remember. If anyone finds any bad links or mistakes, please e-mail me..... Thanks for your time and feedback.

The lessons are great!!!! Good idea leaving the basic recording instructions at the begining of each lesson. Then I don't have to click back and forth between previous lessons. I'm ready for multitrack when you are. thanks again.

Hi Kenny,

Well, I guess it's time to start eating my hat..... I didn't think you would get much interest in return for the amount of work you have to put into your tutorial project. I WAS WRONG! You are getting good feedback and the lessons are good for the beginner. I have bookmarked your link and will send people with basic questions there in the future. Congrats!! Good Luck Voodoo

I just completed the first multitrack lesson. It's titled "Producing a complete commercial and mixing it down in multitrack" It will be added to the website later this evening. The lesson covers recording and editing vocals and a music bed, placing those waveforms in multitrack, adjusting the levels, and then mixing it down. The lesson has 31 !!! screen shots and basic instructions. Give me some feedback. You can view all of the lessons at http://www.timelinecenter.com

I GUESS WE WIL SEE HOW STEEP THIS LEARNING CURVE IS. LOL . TELL ME IF I'M MOVING TOO FAST.

OK, I would like to get some feedback from people who have used the lessons over that last few weeks.

#1 am I moving too fast with the new multitrack lesson or do you want me to stay at this pace?

#2 If you want me to cover a few more single track lessons, what topics should I cover?

#3 are there too many screen shots in the lessons ?

I've had some e-mail feedback... but not enough to judge how the project is going. I don't want to expend too much energy in the wrong areas. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well...... I haven't got much feedback since I finished the multitrack lesson. So I will assume that the lessons covered all of the basic editing questions for radio people or you are using them to trouble shoot your own problems. Thanks for all of the e-mail and feedback. e-mail me if you have any questions.

Radiokenny

Site is great, instructions are great, but now we've upgraded to cep2.0. Quite a bit of difference in some areas. Newbies and pt staff bauking at some of the changes and new look. (a new look and they get psyched out I guess) Specially in MT. Any thing in the works for CEP2.0??? Maybe a "This is whats new and how it works now" lesson.

Hey...

I have learned so much from my own tinkering about that was made possible by your very easy to follow lessons.

I still have an issue with the very scientific basics like dB measurements and how that relates to levels and so on. As a "non-musician" using cooledit, i'd appreciate any one with advice on how to get my head round levels and so on...

Your information is my education is my future.

Sounds like a great idea. If enough people think they can use the lessons, I will make cep 2.0 basic lessons like previous lessons. If people want to cover some other areas of the new cep 2.0 ..... I will create them also.

If you think you can use them..... please post your request in this forum. I will always supply if there is an ample enough demand.

So, what do you say?............... Do we want 2.0 basic lessons?

I will be the first to say this is a great idea. My station is thinking about getting 2.0 sometime soon, so this would help me get ahead of the game and familiarize myself with the new look. I don't know how much the new software differs from 1.2a, because I havent used it. But if the lessons and screenshots are anything like your previous lessons, they will be 1st class. Thanks for donating your personal time to this project. Everyone else should also give some props to radiokenny.

OK..... here RK here's a prop! Honestly, when Kenny first started this I didn't think there would be the interest that there was.. I was wrong. Evidently, alot of people don't want to go to the trouble of learning things on their own anymore and prefer to be spoonfed. Kenny, you have done a great job and your site is nice as well. Keep up the good work. You ought to consider not giving these efforts away for free, instead put all of it together, contact Synt and get a publisher. These same people that will buy a software and not go to the trouble of learning to use it, will buy you book and not go to the trouble of reading it! Good Luck Voodoo

Hi,I was referred to your web page by ozpeter. So thanks to him for leading me here. I would like to see a walk through of CE2K, but,I am very new to recording, absolutely new,so any help I can get using this program is really appreciated. Thank you for the time in creating the help pages you have already. If you (as an experienced user of) CEP feel that the programs are related close enough, then maybe you wouldn't have to justify the time in creating a CE2K Help page. For me I have not taken a close enough look at both programs to see if there is that big of an operating difference, outside of the fact that CEP has all the candy professionals could use. Regards,FrankG.

Thanks for the feedback on the lessons. The basic operation of Cool Edit 2k and Cool Edit Pro 1.0 or 1.2a are the same... "ex. cutting and pasting" If you have the 2k plug-in for multitrack you can also do the multitrack lessons. You should still be able to follow all of the single track lessons with no problem. I'm currently knee deep in loopology ...therefore I haven't started any lessons for CEP 2.0. The lessons will be very basic and will center around radio production....if I decide to do them.

The people who are trying to get a basic concept of cep 2.0 and how to use .cep or "cool edit loop files. Radiokenny has posted an example multitrack sample. The session is a good example for people trying to make music beds for commercials. The session contains a few loops from the 70's collection. Make sure you have downloaded and installed the loops before opening the multitrack session or it won't work. Just double click on the multitrack session and it should open up. Mess around with the tracks and move the loops around, Tell me if it helps you grasp the concept. The session is a :60 music bed with a stinger. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!! something in the "easy to learn" category would be excellent.... I bought the program to edit my comedy and get back into radio... I want to know the program before I start applying for positions as extra incentive to hire me. I NEED to learn this program. If their is any way to get, make, steal, a step by step instructional I would love it. Big Grin
