There's an outgoing message on a phone line that I want to record. I use Win98SE and I tried using the "manual dialer," which said it was talking to the correct phone, but I couldn't hear it through my speakers and I couldn't find any channel/setting on my sound card to allow Cool Edit to record.

Any ideas? Thanks!

turet, I'll take a stab at this. I'm going to assume you mean the "Phone Dialer" program that comes with Win98SE. If, in fact, you're refering to some third-party software, you may ignore the rest of this post.

Anyway, the Windows Phone Dialer is simply that, a program that dials a phone number for you, using your computer and modem. It has nothing to do with any sound transfer functions. You would actually need to be holding the phone to your ear when you use this program as the "dialer" will release the phone line as soon as its finished, thus, hanging up as soon as it had dialed.

The only possible exception to this would be if your modem had the spkr out/mic in connections built into it, as some do. Then, of course, you would need to have the "spkr out", (of the modem), routed to the line in of your sound card, and THIS part I'm not even sure of. Just a guess. Also, I doubt that this would produce very satisfactory results. The spkr out on a modem might be a bit "hot" for the line-in jack of your sound card.

Hope this helps some.

I record phone messages often. This is how I have done it in the past. My cordless phone has an eighth inch earphone jack and I run out of that to my line in on the PC. Make sure that you tell the sound card to take the "line in" when recording. Good luck

Radio Shack (among others) also sells a phone recording device (useful if you have friends who are white house interns, heh). Plug it into a phone jack which is convenient to your computer. There is a mono 1/8th plug coming out which will have your audio from the phone line. However, it's a mike level output, intended for an analogue tape recorder, so you would also need one of those dampeners to plug in-line (also sold at RS) and knock it down to line level (or close).

You'd need a pre-amp to knock it up to line level ... not down.

Conversely you could always plug it into the mic jack on your soundcard. I realise that soundcard mic pre-amps are noisy, but it's a phone line. How much noisier could it get?

I've had no problems in getting a clear sound into CEP using a 3 inch jack-to-jack cable from Modem SPK OUT to SoundCard LineIn. And I live in Romania, and the phone lines are `supposed` to be noisy Smile
Just run some filter afterwards, to eliminate the peaks with distorsion.
