Big trouble recording with a microphone

I am new to cool edit -- but not that new, last week I did my first
production and microphone worked just fine. Now, it doesn't record.

I have 3 different microphones and tried with all of them - dead.
So, it is not a microphone's fault. I tested even with the line-in
and my voice comes clearly via speakers. So, microphones are Ok,
and it appears that the sound card responds fine (if I am correct)

Yet, when I hit record in cool edit - I just get a silence or sometimes
a very muffled tone (like someone behind 10 feet brick wall)....

I did check the soundcard setting (clicking on that microphone icon and it is set to record from a microphone at full volume.

Help, I am desperate!

sunny greetings from Sarasota,

Thanks a lot Pascal -- I don't think it would be battery,
because I tried with 3 different microphones which all worked
fine last week. One of them has brand new battery anyway.

Cables are fine (I tried all possibilities just in case)
-- but mostly I remember how I did it last week.

> Maybe soundcard driver problem, try reinstall drivers.

I have a feeling that this might be it.

In recording control there is an advanced control for
microphone -- all bass and all trebles is way down and
it doesn't allow me to increase it. I think it should be
somewhere in the middle and if it is a "control" I should
be able to control it - right?

I will try to reinstall the driver - hopefulkly this will help.

It is a spoken word (I am producing an audio seminar) and this
is the setting I am using.

Thanks again for your help.
Please check with me in a while -- parhaps you can help some more ?

Steve, it is Yamaha.

I don't want to sound silly but how do I re-install
driver? I did it once but a techie guided me step by
step over the phone...

It seems as if you are using the standard windows mixer, in which case you won't have the bass and treble controls enabled on record anyway. If you have one, you could try putting a tick in the 'microphone gain control' box. Also go to options>properties>recording and make sure that the mic is actually selected in there, not just the first screen that turns up, which is the playback one.

As far as reinstalling the drivers is concerned, not all Yamahas use the same procedure, but basically, the best way to do this is to uninstall the sound card in Settings>Control Panel>System>Device Manger and, with the correct software to hand, restart the computer and let Windows 'discover' it. At that point there should be screen prompts, which you follow. This isn't the only way to reinstall it by any means, and if you're at all unsure, then best ring tech support again.

Steve - thanks a lot. Reinstalling the driver worked
like a charm! I did follow yur instruction.

And the mike works fine as well! It was
indeed probably
some misconfiguration with that driver.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
