We want to use our OMF files from our AVID NLE with Cool Edit, but have been told this can not be done. We were told that only Pro-Tools can take OMF because both are from the same company. We are very happy with Coold Edit and are not in the mood to spend the 12K Pro-Tools price to improve our audio quality on our videos.

Any thoughts on making Cool Edit work with OMF or are there other apps we should look at ?

well,you could download the demoversion
of protools, and than create a .wav file from your OMF files (I think). If this works it at least saves you top $$

Hi Revox. Here's a little info on OMF files...

Open Media Framework Interchange (OMFI sometimes abbreviated to OMF)

OMF is a file interchange standard developed by Avid which allows work to be passed between different audio, picture and video editing systems. Avid Systems include OMF export and import capability. Digidesign is an Avid company and their flagship product, Pro Tools, can import and export OMF projects with the aid of a utility called Digitranslator available from Digidesign.

The fact is, this is a proprietary format, so you'd have to do your conversion in the Avid/PT realm to be able to bring it into any other application. I'd call digi and see if there is an 'internal' way to export the audio as either .WAV or AIFF (both of which will work in Cool Edit). There is even a way to open SDII files in Cool Edit if that is an option. Email us for the details on doing that, should you need it.
