This is my first post, so please be gentle. :-)

I am interested in "flattening" some of my audio files (ripped from commercial CD's that I own) either by increasing the lower amplitudes proportionally or decreasing the higher amplitudes, without clipping the peaks. Many classical music CD's that I own have some very quiet parts, in some of the movements, which are difficult to enjoy while on the highway in my car. In other words, I have to manually increase the volume during the quiet spots, and reduce it during the forte portions. Will Cool Edit do this?

An example of what I am talking about would be Beethoven's 7th Symphony. Most discs of this symphony have such dynamic range that it is impossible to enjoy the work on the highway without constantly fiddling with the volume control.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I know what you mean about listening to dynamic music in the car. You need some
compression for it. Cool Edit can do this.
Look under Transform\Dynamics Processing and
choose one of the compression presets.

Hi Robin. If you are using CEP (or Ce2k with the Tweakin Toys PlugIn) you might also try out the Hard Limiter, found under Transform>Amplitude>Hard Limiter.

Hey, thanks for the help younglove and SyntSupp. I'm getting ready to try one of those techniques. I'll post a report on my successes (or lack thereof.) :-)

This is what I do: Transform, Amplitude, Dynamics Processing, then the 3rd Preset (3:1 Compressor>30dB), Traditional tab. Under Ratios change the 3 to a 2, or 1.5--you'll have to experiment to get what you want. Classical music needs some compression, but the CoolEdit Presets are usually way too much. I have some classical songs I compressed this way at http://www.abm-enterprises.net . Cheap mic and sound card; I'm getting better stuff.

With all respect to the creator of this musical masterpiece, I would choose a better environment to listen and enjoy the piece.

Anyhow, the above suggestions are good suggestions. Oh man, what can we do sometimes to carry our addictions around!!!

I hope it was gentle enough!!! :-)))

Urumugi! "Choose a better environment"?? A lot of us are stuck with the environments we've got.

Ok Bragov,
I didn't realize that some of us could spend a lot of time on the road. Apologize for that. However, it's a harsh environment to start with and especially when you want to listen to classical music.

I understand what you mean, and certainly agree that listening to Beethoven's 7th in a peaceful place would be a finer experience! But sometimes music helps us handle things that would otherwise be unbearable. I spend many hours a week on LA freeways, and there's a lot that I just tune out, so that the eucalyptus trees and whatever I'm listening to are most of what's in my head.

Best wishes, Vicky

Vicky, I'll leave uru to explain about LOL, but I know exactly what you mean about the car journeys. Used to frighten myself sometimes by getting really involved with a good performance and then realising that I could recall none of the journey I'd just done!

Laugh out loud. I actually got in mind the LA traffic image while reading your first reply. I was on the road 5 hours a day/ 6 days a week for about 3 years in some country where the roads are a battlefield. Yes music, helped me to survived.
