Thanks for your time and assistance.

You can try CDex at http://www.dailymp3.com/cdrippers.html . They also have lots of other good rippers too.
But if you have Win95/98 check out this cool alternative. When you look at your CD drive in Explorer, the CDA files will show up as wave files and you can just copy and paste or drag and drop from the CD drive to yur hard drive. You can also open the CDA file on the CD directly into Cool Edit.

If you don't need on-the-fly mp3 encoding try EAC (Exact Audio Copy) it is excellent digital audio extraction software.

I know nothing about CD ripping, but I think the new MS media player said something about now having that capability?

Mark, some CD burning software has 'ripping' capability built in. I use Adaptec's "EZ CD Creator 4", and I use it when I want to get a file from CD to HD.

Try ACXtrator. http://www.marvintec.com/ I've used a few rippers in my time and this one is very fast compared to some I've used. It will extract and encode an Audio CD in less than 4 minutes.
It's compact and easy to use (copy the whole CD with only a single click)
It supports CDDB and freedb
It supports the CDPLAYER.INI file
It can create filenames and directories automatically.
And the best bit I like..it can extract very short passages from CD's..as low as 1 frame at a time. In its shareware form, its a full working copy with loads of irritating popups, but it can be registered for £19. I used MP3 toolz, real and music match, but this one does the business!
