Dear community:

We know that the inevitable is approaching: the shutting of these virtual doors. (It's already a great time over at the Audiomasters Forum, so if you've not given it a try, come check it out.)

Meanwhile, thankfully, the original furor over the future of this forum has subsided. Now, several weeks later, here is an announcement worth noting at http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?50@@.1dea41ff
Quote:
Just a heads-up that we are planning scheduled maintenance of the Adobe User to User Forums for next weekend, August 16 and 17, 2003.

The forums will not be available during the maintenance. They are scheduled to reopen on Monday, August 18, 2003.

Included in this downtime will be merging the Syntrillium Forums into the Adobe User to User Forums and a new look for the Adobe User to User Forums.

It is inferred that those dates may not be firm.

I don't want to create a bunch of useless speculation or whining. I do wish to plainly state the implication that this forum may go dark in a week. But that might only be a useless speculation!

Kindest regards,

Bill

Good post, MC.
And none of it is out of line, at all.

Hmmmmm. I wonder what they mean by "new look". If it's an honest attempt to make things a bit more sensible, I will be very interested.

The new forum is a chat room. Nothing more. The moderation has completely nullified the advantage of having a forum that isn't intrinsically related to any corporate entities. That is, it is playing heavily to Adobe, in more ways than one. So I don't feel at all out of line by saying that, if they get their act together, I'll participate.

Also, I wonder what the current definition of "merging" is. It implies something a bit more than just turning this forum off, and turning their's on. Half of the revolt was based on the possible loss of this forum's content. I guess we'll see. Hopefully it will be a pleasant surprise.

DK has said that there was a forum software update available that had not been implemented yet. I imagine we will see that update implemented, plus whatever few tweaks they can make to address the concerns raised by the Synt forum folks.

We also know they have been working on porting the info/data from the Synt forums into a format that will fit with Adobe's current forum software. I expect we will be given access to that in some sort of read-only format. I would be pleasantly surprised if, instead, we got a link to the Snitz Forums 2000 database. That would be nice, but I'm not expecting it.

I noticed (more by accident than design when playing around with the 'subscriptions' facility on the Adobe forum) that a recent minor and accidental change in the Adobe forum layout generated about 60 posts there in the space of a few hours, and a great deal of heat!

When their forums reopen in their new format I forsee a massive reaction for and against by their existing users - they seem to be just as passionate as we are about such matters, and there are rather a lot of them!

I'm just suggesting in advance that, when such of as as care to, do try out the new forum and sharpen our pencils to comment, suggest, complain, or even compliment, that we bear in mind the larger picture into which, perhaps sadly, we find ourselves inserted. Hopefully in due course any concerns we have will be at least noted if not addressed, but I'll predict that it will run pretty hot there for quite some days - the dust will take some time to settle - and I wouldn't read too much into response times from the system as well as from the 'volunteers' at the outset either.

And if I were the latter, in receipt of probably thousands of rants from the wide world of outraged Adobe users, comments that were calmly and cogently put might carry the most weight.

And of course, we have an alternative!

I can only add one thing of importance to what oz has already said...
Everyone should keep in mind that the Adobe forums are basically an online representation of the Adobe newsgroups - therefore, they are all read-only. That's just the way it is.
;)

Best.... -Jon

Yes, now that the forum plan looks set, we were going to post a message here and let everyone know what was going to be happening to the forums, but it looks like the Adobe forum folks posted their notice first!

We know that a lot of you were less than impressed by the Adobe forums. Because it is so important to us to keep this community intact, we spent a lot of time working with the folks who are in charge of the forums over there, and together we've worked on producing what we think is a much better forum experience. In fact, Adobe is updating all their forum software across the board based on requests from the Cool Edit/Audition team.

Now, we have not been able to totally replicate the current forum user experience on the new forums. There were a number of technical reasons, including scalability, that prevented that. However, we have addressed the issues by making the forums much more readable, along with better navigation and posting abilities. Plus, the Web Crossing forums add some cool features that we've never had here, like slick subscription options and the ability to use a news reader to browse the groups (which is especially nice for those on slow connections!)

As for the most important part--all these thousands of posts--we've managed to come up with a solution. Every single thread and post here will be imported into the new forums! Plus, all the users here will be set up with a user account on the new forums so that you will be able to see who posted what, and be able to continue your conversations where you left off. Some of your user names are already in use on the Adobe forums, so the user name will have the tag "_synt" automatically appended on the end in order to make the name unique. Similarly, the passwords that you are all using here could not be transferred over because they are encoded such that even WE can't see what they are. Everyone who is registered here will receive an email with their new user name (if needed) and new password some time next Monday or Tuesday... so make sure your current email address on the forums is correct! You will be able to edit both your names and passwords in the preferences section after you log on for the first time.

The forums will go down this Friday afternoon/evening (Pacific time) so that we can do all the data organization over the weekend. They should be up by Tuesday morning at their new location, and we'll post a notice here along with a link. Undoubtedly there'll be some bumps in the road as we try to do all of this, so please bear with us while we work out the kinks! We'll look forward to seeing you in our new home next week!

P.S. The M.D. sends his best from the road with the message, "See you again soon, and happy recording!"

What stunning news! Thank you for the heads up -- and perhaps this thread should be made sticky, or the Syntrillium Software post above put into a new sticky thread. In any case, thank you for the thorough news. Many will be glad to know what's happening.

TWO DAYS! Someone ought to stick a count-down counter at the top of the topics page...

That all sounds very promising and it's good that somebody cares! (which perhaps we should never have doubted).

To those who haven't tried the 'subscription' system on the Adobe forums, I'd stongly recommend giving it a whirl (when the new forums are up and running). My personal experience has been that it's a very efficient way of checking through what's new whenever you visit. It's not based on when you last logged in - it actually notes which individual threads you've read. So it you have to log off part way through (or get cut off!) you can simply pick up from where you were when you return. And you can mark all threads as read if you get bored.

And I predict the last post on this forum will be.... "bump"!
