In 98SE it was Start >> Programs >> Accessories >>>System Tools >> System Information >> from the menu bar, select Tools >> System Configuration Utility >> Click on the start up tab >> uncheck all items except for the following:

- Scan Registry
- System Tray

How do you get to this menu in XP? I've got the world's most ugly ass icon popping up everytime I turn on my computer.

Hey Clothesburner,

If you go the msconfig route, when you uncheck something, you will then get a message telling you that you are using "selective startup" every time you boot. There is an option that appears with it to turn it off, "never show this message again" but, I could never shut it up.

So, here is the registry key that dictates startup items. If you feel uneasy editing the registry directly, that's fine, leave it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

There are four more keys that follow this one, each one starts with "run", that also call up startup items.
