Hello ....Was hoping to get some help. This is my first time with this kind of thing. Just downloaded Cool Edit trial to see if it was for me but I am having some trouble. I am recording voice thru a Shure SM58 directly into my computer which is a Dell pent 4 with SB Live soundcard. I have tried to adjust recording levels by using the windows mixer but it is all the way up.My wave on the screen has no breadth. I only hit -18 db on the vu monitor. On playback and at full volume it is not very loud. How do I adjust this input? Should I be using an external mixer? Do I need to upgrade my soundcard? Or am I missing something simple. I want to know how this system works with mine before a purchase. Thanks in advance......John

It certainly sounds as if the soundcard isn't sensitive enough for the mic. But in the Windows Mixer you may have a mic input sensitivity control labelled "Mic Boost 20dB" or something like that (on the record side of the mixer) - have you got that ticked, if present?
BTW, this has nothing to do with CE as such - you'd have the same problem with any recording app, as CE just takes what the soundcard sends it when recording.

If you have an external mixer already, of course try that into the line input of the card. Or try a more sensitive mic. There's various permutations and combinations possible - ideally borrow some kit from a friend to try some scenarios before spending more.
