How much money did you pay for your copy of Cool Edit? What version is it. How long has it been installed on your computer? Same questions for your friend whose copy you borrowed.

Well, yes.
What version of Cool Edit? (Cool Edit 2000, Cool Edit Pro 1.2, 2.0 or 2.1)
And,
What does the error message SAY ?

Ok well thanks for the response dawg. You probably have a PE_CIH virus roaming around on your hard disk. Or, maybe not.
If the error message pops up just as the progress bar caption says "Building Layout" it's a distinct possibility.
Course I'm talking about Cool Edit Pro 2.0 or 2.1.
Oh yeah, which version did you have ?
Or maybe you need to give your hard disk a good swift headslap. Or drop it on the floor from a height of about eight feet or so.
Try sticking it in the freezer for a couple of days.
Or, gently warming it in a 250 degree oven for a few hours, or until it stinks.
(Just kidding, I'm bored.)

the version is 2.0 and the error pops up when it says building layout. The error report says this will be included in it "C:\DOCUME~1\??\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERD.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt" if that is any mroe help to u guys. i think i might have that virus u talkin about PE_CIH because something similar happened to WIndows Media Player every time i tryed to play a file on it but now its fine.

Wonder why CEP 2.x is so vulnerable to these things.....In my case, and I've said this before but, what the hell, I'll say it again - Nothing else on my system seemed to be affected in the least. And my computer was absolutely crawling with instances of "CIH".
And I've been able to bump at least four people in the right direction when reporting these symptoms. The "building layout" freeze.

Well, then that's a good thing. The Syntrillium team have produced yet another indicator of system health.

Amazing with these viruses! Now, am I imagining things, or are these viruses especially prevalent with those still using 2.0 instead of 2.1 (William excepted here)?

MC, you make it sound like people are getting the virus from CEP 2.0 more often than from 2.1 !
But seriously, there's something about this relatively recent spate of posts that's troubling.
I don't see anybody mentioning that they have been dealing with the problem for any length of time.......Usually they've "just downloaded" the copy of CEP that's causing problems. And the thing is, you can't get 2.0 from Syntrillium anymore.
Then again, I couldn't get 2.0 or 2.1 to work in the presence of this virus, except in XP.
So yeah, I would say the most common complaints come from 2.0 users who are running with 98,SE, or ME. And the least common would be 2.1 users running with XP. In fact I'm not sure if anybody from the latter group has had this problem.

Of course I don't mean it to sound like the program is the cause of the virus -- obviously it isn't. I don't even think it's susceptible more than anything else (note that Binnie also had probems with WMP, suggesting that this particular virus attacks multimedia in general).
I want to be careful not to be unfair here, so I'll give another clue as to my previous drift. What would motivate a significant group of people to not upgrade to 2.0?

2.1 ? Do you mean "What would motivate a significant group of people to not upgrade to 2.1?"
Right, or, like I said, how would you go about downloading CEP 2.0 today ?
But, I'm gonna be the last person to make any assumptions, because in this case, it could have been me at the other end........

Unless of course... they "acquired" a version (without paying) and have no intention of ever paying, hence no "upgrading" of versions.
