okay, i am a beginner, so please have mercy if i sound too ignorant. I have been using CEP version 1.2 for about 2 yrs now, mostly to make mixed cds for myself. it's been great. Recently, i bought an mp3 player for the gym. I like it but find that it doesn't play songs very lous. Full volume is still not loiud enough for me. I thought one solution might be to raise the volume level af all tracks in CEP and then it would sound louder in mp3 player. Apparently I can't do this in CEP? When I download mp3 tracks into the multitrack, it ends up sounding like white noise. Am I going to be able to do what I want to, or am I destined to have to fork over the 99.00 to upgrade to version 2?.....Confused.....Thanks in advance to any patient soul that can help.....Larry

There was a free download that would allow you to open and save as MP3. I'm not sure if it's still available. Other than that... no, you won't be able to work in an MP3 format with ver1.2a (or earlier). Shy

This came up again a few months ago, but I'm not going to go dig for it -

Just to clarify, the .mp3 plugin for Cool Edit Pro version 1.2 was discontinued with the release of Cool Edit Pro version 2.0 back in April of 2002 - and it used to cost US$29.

Cool Edit 2000 has (had?) the ablility to render .mp3 files built in.

Best... -Jon

Not to mention that you'll lose audio quality when you open up an MP3, edit it (raise the volume or compress it), and then save it back to MP3.

MP3 is a lossy type of file compression. The quality losses due to the bit rates are exponential and not cummulative.

Thanks for clearing that up Jon. Having 1.0,1.2 (and the update 1.2a), I never had the need for the plug-in, (not to mention I despise lossy compression) but I remembered mention of it. Funnily, I thought it was a "free" download. Shy

I really only bought the plugin because I was building websites at the time, and they required audio clips, like it or not...

CD quality is 10Mb/min stereo ... you do the math. Divide your players memory by 10, and that's how many track minutes you have. a 60Mb player would give you 6 tack minutes, or 1.5 songs.
