Recently I had this problem emerge after months of no problems. I can record audio at even very high rates, 32 bit etc, but when I go to play back the entire system halts or the recording of new tracks halts, it takes a few seconds for the graphics to catch up, and then playback stops. Sometimes this happens while recording. It is not the settings like buffers and such I don't think.
I am running Windows 98 SE and M-Audio Delta 66. None of my programs detects the device drivers correctly as far as their capabilites. I get the MMsytem error when I try to use them, so I have been using Wavemapper, which does indicate that it accepts these higher rates.
Does anyone have any idea on what might be wrong? I suspect my memory settings or something in the system, but just can't get it back to what it was.

I cant say for sure but it sounds to me like you need to check your windows mixer and possibly re-install your sound card drivers and software. Also go to the control panel - multimedia and check what devices are set for record and playback. Actually Id do that first.

Which usually is a sign that something on the system has been changed (knowingly or unknowingly). Is this system also used for Internet browsing? Have you scanned for a virus? Usually, the "system optimization tips" in the Tips and Tricks section will help to streamline your system for better performance, but even optimizing can't help an infected computer....
