hi. so i'm kind of new to this, but i've been lurking around here for a little while, figuring out what i need to buy.
i want to record my drums with 4 mics to 4 channels on my laptop (i've read about the pitfalls of laptop recording here, but that's what i've got...)
here is what i understand i need so far:
mics --> mixer --> external audio interface (such as echo layla, etc.) --> laptop
but i just read about this Edirol UA-1000 thing coming out, with usb 2.0 and 4 mic preamps. so does this mean i can just plug mic's directly into it and not have to buy a mixer? because just getting the edirol would be cheaper/simpler than the layla + a good mixer.

Broadly speaking - yes, you could just use the Edirol unit for this, although I've no idea how good it actually sounds.
Personally, I think it's better to go the hardware mixer route for a number of reasons, the biggest one being the flexibility it will give you.

Make sure the new card does not depend on ASIO drivers or you may be limited to 2 channels. CEP does not support ASIO.

thanks for the replies. what are the benefits of a mixer besides being able to physically slide the volume up and down? i don't really need effects or anything. the edirol seems to have little volume knobs next to each mic input... that's probably good enough for me, i'm thinking.
the spec says it supports ASIO 2.0 and WDM drivers. does that mean it won't work with cep?

and i have a dumb question: would it be possible to get 4 channels in by plugging in 2 of these $35 bad boys: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/index.html

oh right, and a mixer provides more flexibility because i can hook more mics into it if i want, and mix them down to one channel... nevermind.
i'm kind of into these imic things though... possibly because of my diy background of duct-taping together the cheapest possible solution

I had a 4 channel input M-Audio Quatro, USB 1.1. The only way to use all 4 channels was to us ASIO. In WDM it only had 2 channels in. I don't know enough about this to tell you any more... I just tried a forum search for ASIO and came up with 9 pages of results though. That would be a good place to look.

That's one reason. Another is the ease with which you can provide foldback to the artists. You could also use it for mixing down (personally, I much prefer 'real' faders and fingers to 'virtual' ones and a mouse). It's also a great way to control levels into your computer from different sources (bearing in mind that most decent cards have no control over this sort of thing).
It's surprising how useful you'll find a small mixer, once you own it .
