Hi all,
I have a whole lot of 3 hour wav files from a radio show I do in Melbourne, and I thought to save on hard disk space, I would use Cool Edit's batch convert facility to convert them all to .mp3 files.
I set it up, and after converting 1-2 files, Cool Edit displays an error saying that Cool Edit has encountered an error and needs to close, I then reboot my computer and start the process again with the same results.
My system is brand new, its a P4 2.6 with 512mb ram, a 40gb and 80gb hard disk drive, Hoontech ST Audio sound card (DSP24Value) DVRaptor capture card etc etc.
Can anyone shed some light on why this would be happening??

We'd need more info than that, I'm afraid...
Like, what's the OS? And how have you got the temp files set up? If you are batch-converting large files, you really need to make sure that the system is treating each file, and then closing it before moving onto the next one, otherwise you really could run into problems, assuming that they're uncompressed WAV files you're starting with.

I am running WinXP Pro, and and I have two 100mb temp files set up one on the C: drive and the other on the D: drive.
Because the .wav files are around 900mb to 1gb, would the system need a temp file at least that size?

There may be some misconceptions here...
First, make sure your drive has free space available for the job.
Second, the reserve is what CE won't use, so keep that in mind.
Third, Steve's idea about having your script finish with each file and close it before moving on is right on the money.
Let us know how you fare. :)
Best... -Jon

Be careful with interpreting the CEP temp file settings - what is indicated is the reserved space guaranteed to be left on the disk - which is why you wouldn't normally need to alter it from its 10Meg default unless you had a very good reason - like having a Windows temp file that could be resized on the same partition (also not a good idea!)
It probably is a good idea to run through the XP setup instructions in the 'Tips and Tricks' forum, though. And then try the process again, making sure that nothing's running in the background. If it crashes, make a note of exactly what message you get. You may at this stage need to report this to prosupport, but you have to try all of the basic stuff first.
The other thing you could try is reducing the size of the WAV files and then doing the batch again. But as long as you follow all the basic guidelines outlined, the whole process should work fine, as far as I'm aware.

When you say make sure the scripts are closing the file before moving on to the next one, I agree, though I am using the Batch File Convert option under the File menu and setting it up through there, I just assumed that it closes each file before moving on to the next one, there is a check box to delete the file if the conversion is successful, and I checked that, is that sufficient??
So the temporary files in Cool Edit Pro are not relevant, and it wo9n't make any difference making them 1gb or so?
Sorry for the clarifications, I have not run across anything like this before and never had to play around with them.
Thanks for your help,
Glen

The whole point is that you cannot determine the temp file size at all - it depends entirely on what CEP requires for the operations you are asking it to do. The only thing that you can do is reserve a little space on the allocated drive for something else - this is the only setting that you can determine, and you'd normally leave it set at the default. The temp files most certainly are relevant! So you leave the reserve size alone. I only have CEP SE on this machine, and in there it uses the slightly ambiguous term 'reserve free', but this is exactly what that means - it's how much free space is reserved on the drive, and it's set at 10Mbytes. But without even needing to switch on the DAW, I can tell you anyway that the situation is the same on later CEP versions.
As far as I'm aware, the Batch File Convert works correctly, so it's probably not this that's causing the problem.
