What are they used for? Why are they so funny looking?
Seriously, what is a good use for them. My brother manages a gas station, and found an Audio Technica at815b shotgun mic in it's case, next to the car wash. that was several months ago, and nobody claimed it, so he gave it to me. Here's a link to the audio technica website, right to this thing's page.

This would be excellent for highlighting the wingnut on a high-hat rig. But seriously i'm not sure beyond highlighting a small instrument.

Why do they look funny? That long tube is called an 'interference tube', and basically, it cancels out sound arriving from the side using a bit of slightly obscure acoustic theory you don't need to worry about - it just works! So they are extremely directional.
They are the sort of mic that goes inside those big woolly muffs that TV report crews use - they are useful, because they can remain just outside the shot but still get a good response from interviewees. You have to use them on the end of a 'fishpole' as a rule, and also wearing earphones is a must, otherwise you'll never know when it's pointing exactly in the right direction. Only ever really used for 'actuality' - you wouldn't use this sort of mic unless you had to. They come in different lengths, according to how directional you want them to be. I have two - one similar to yours, and a shorter one which actually gets more use. But mine are AKGs.
In general, not much use in a studio at all, but some use for clandestine surveillance, although there are better ways to pick up what you want from a distance. But if you are the sound guy in a TV crew, almost essential.
And where this leaves you, apart from putting it on Ebay, I don't know!

Hey GothicV,
Steve G is right, shotguns are primarily used in the audio for film/video world. The only non-video applications I've used them for is gathering sound effects in the field and recording voice overs for software demonstrations. BTW interested in selling it? ;)
Thanks,
Shawn

As a matter of fact, I am! The list price is around $350 USD, so I think that $200 canadian is fine, you pay shipping. I live in Vancouver, BC. Email any more questions/contact info to
btw 200 canadian equals roughly $146.74 USD.

I didn't have any immediate plans to go to Canada - perhaps I could persuade some friends to go up for a day of shopping and dim-sum. ;)
I'll get back to you on that.:D

Well that all depends on your definition of "up":
•There is no one up or down in space. For that matter, thinking in terms of relativity, there really is no one right or left.
•Standing here, in my office, when I think of "up" I look at the ceiling, or out the window at the sky.
•If standing somewhere toward the center of the earth, where you'd land if going "up" would be heavily skewed by movements of only inches.
So, if North isn't "up", it also isn't "down".
However, looking in just about any map on a globe, atlas, or phone book, British Columbia is, in my definition, no matter how technically incorrect, "up" from Washington State.
But technically, you're right: North is not "up".

Post, you're from Seattle aren't you (or was that Federal Way)?
I vaguely remember you saying something about being from around here.

Really, it's Auburn. Well, technically, the address on the mabo says "Enumscratch", but really it's Auburn. Good memory.
