Does anyone have a recommendation for an LCD flat screen PC monitor brand & model that they have used, and really like? I've been so discouraged by models I see in the stores here-- the clarity & focus just aren't there, especially for text. My eyes have grown rather picky about that, especially with my prescription computer glasses, which only make the focus problems more obvious. I'm especially interested in 17- to 18-inch units.

Thanks in advance,

Although prices have been dropping and quality improving, for myself it's still a 'wait & see' area. Meanwhile I have an exceptionally deep desk so the lump behind my screen doesn't matter.

You'll pay for a tighter dot-pitch, no matter what you buy - LCD or CRT. Since the larger CRT's still have the LCD's beat for viewable resolution vs. cost, I'm sticking with 19-inch CRT's too... for now.
;)

Best... -Jon

A couple of years ago I had to briefly run CoolEdit on a laptop, and found the LCD screen very difficult to use: lack of crisp detail, and more annoying, the cursor seemed to lag considerably behind the music/speech that was playing.

That was a short-term issue, but the experience has made me hesitant to invest $$ in an LCD screen for my desktop system. Are the newer screens better in these regards? Any regular users of CE on a flat panel care to comment? My experience may no longer be relavent. Thanks.

If you need to stare at the screen for hours upon hours, CRTs are the way to go. LCD technology can't touch CRT in that regard. I would only recommend the flat panel LCD display for the gee whiz factor, showing off to your clients, and space restrictions. Also, because of the new technology gee whiz factor of the LCD, CRT prices have come down in price dramatically. I recently picked up a 19" CRT monitor for $150. I can stare at it in hi res mode of 1280x1024 mode all day with no fatigue.

I am using the NEC/Mitsubishi 1550v and 1555V Monitors at 780x1025 resolution and 75hz refresh...excellent clarity, no flicker. Very Satisfield. You can find on ebay or other auctions for around $250US.

The thing about LCDs that suck:
1) Slower refresh (more ghosting)
2) Less accurate color
3) One good resolution.

The first 2 are getting better all the time. I got a $400US Microtek 18" and it works for me. I can play guitar at the PC without inducing buzz now. Photo retouchers and fast motion gamers or video editors still may not like them, but for most uses they've gotten pretty good. I suspect those who say they're "terrible" either judged an older one (they've come a LONG way in the last few years) or were viewing at other than native resolution. On an LCD, you get ONE native resolution that looks sharp - that's because there are that many actual pixels in the screen. Any other resolution will use interpolation, and will be fuzzy and harder on the eyes. This is why I chose an 18" monitor. It has the same resolution as a 17", but the pixels are bigger. Most 17" ones have pixels that are just too small. A 19" would be even better, but too much $$ for me. Then, most 20" models jump up to a higher resolution and the pixels are tiny again.

Actually, 1/4 resolution is "native" also, since no interpolation is needed; 4 pixels become one.

Hi,
I just got a computer to use for cooledit and chose an NEC 1560v
15in. 1078x768 lcd and after choosing the color intensity I find
it very easy to read everything. $279 at newegg.com NEC has special
font viewing capability.
