OK, call me anal, but I hate setting up a pair of mics XY on the little T-bar thingy - in order to have the mics on parallel planes with the capsules over/under/split at the midline, the T-bar sits at some screwy angle. Not bad when the mic stand is short, but it is difficult for me to anticipate all the correct compounded angularities (Question) when I'm sticking the mics on a tall stand. Up and down a half dozen times or more to get the placement where I want it ... move this and it throws that off.

If I had a spacer about the length of one mic diameter (+.030") that would screw onto the T-Bar and the mic clip would then screw onto the spacer, the compounded angularities would be replaced by parallel perpendicularities (Approve) and I would be a happier person. I could set my pivots and clamps to coexist on normal planes so adjustments on one axis would not impact positions on other axes.

Do such spacers exist? If so, where can they be purchased? If not, should I start a new product line, or am I the only loon in the swamp who thinks this would be a good idea?

edit:OK - I found one HERE - 'ya gotta' look fast - the link doesn't work as planned. If you go to their PRODUCTS, STANDARD, in the third box down there is a Spacer for Stereo Booms.

Please start a new product line. Tongue I just bought a C1! and a boom stand and it's way too heavy for the stand so i have to put a sandbag on the other end of the boom to balance it. Dead
Great mic though - it's a bit brighter than my 4033. Cool
Ultimately i'm going to need a xy pair over the drums and the regular fleet of mic stands don't cut it anymore. Tongue

Actually, if you need a cheap, large boom, the Quick-Lok A85 is big and sturdy for about $80 - I've used them to hold a pair of large condensers overhead ... without sandbags.

Your initial post is the perfect argument in favour of using MS instead of XY, Zemlin! My Sennheisers just clip together one above the other, snap the bottom one onto the mic stand clip, attach a Y adapter to each mic and the stereo mic lead, just point the whole thing in the right direction and off you go! Very neat, very quick.

I haven't MS'd yet - but as of a few weeks ago I now have the mics to give it a whirl - now I just need a good opportunity.

Hmmmm - maybe tomorrow. Recording a recital - 24 different performers on a variety of instruments, including voice. Mostly kids, I think, and they don't want to close mic anything - just get whatever comes out. None of the performers have mic experience and they won't want the recording to be a distraction.

I was planning to XY with my NT5's, but MS with my C3's might be an interesting experiment. The room has fair to good acoustics. I suppose I could do both and compare the results. Might make for an even more educational experience!

but I still want spacers >:K and have enough machinist experience that if I need to make them myself, I will.

... and market them afterwards?! Perhaps this is your destiny awaiting you!

If you do try MS it would be interesting to hear here of how it goes.

Hmmm - somehow I don't think the spacers would make me a rich man, but I could probably at least cover the cost of my own set!

I found another source listed at $28.
$28?!?! - for a spacer? - are they NUTS?

Maybe I'm not visualizing your need correctly, or maybe this won't work at all with your specific setup, but I've seen XY mikes connected to the t-bar with one mike holder sticking up, and the other hanging down from the bar. Would that give you the clearance you need, without a spacer? The good ol' Atlas mike mount could be rigged this way, since the studs could be unscrewed and inserted "upside down" through the bar.

My T-Bar is like that - it may be an Atlas, I don't know - but when I set up XY I have the mic tips as close together as possible without touching - like the head on a Rode NT4.

These T-Bars are getting interesting! Mine isn't strictly a T-Bar, although it can be... it's 'articulated'. It has two joints, about 2" apart, which means that you can move the arms together or apart easily, and you can swing the arms as far as you want - rather further than you'd ever need to, in fact. It's a doddle to set up.

Mine's like yours, Steve. And the 3 sections are aligned like this:
*sorry, my ASCII pic doesn't work, but look at Steve's pic and then figure one of the 2 side pieces below the center piece instead of above*

so that it doesn't require much vertical angling of 1/2" mics using x-y. I'm not sure if it came that way or if I took it apart & reassembled it.

Easier to show with a picture than to describe! I haven't seen any like this for a while - I've had it since about 1975. The thumbscrews will go either way up, so it's easy to have a mic either side of it when the arms are swung together.

...Reminds me of the spoken bit in a folk song I heard ages ago about a policeman reading out a report about dealing with a hippy in Bristol. Went something along the lines of
'When I accosted the, er 'gentleman', he savagely butted my fist with his nose, and then proceeded to fall down on the ground, shouting "Call me an ambulance". So I said to him "Right, you're a bleedin' ambulance - now get up before you have another accident"...'[/list:029242569d]and so on...
