I've been more impressed by the built in CEP effects than the plug-ins I've tried so far, Cool but Ozone2 has a harmonic exciter that i find usefull.

Are harmonic exciters and sonic maximizers type effects widely used as spice on pop music tracks, or are they reserved primarily as medicine - to salvage poorly recorded tracks? Does Synt. plan on including such effects in CEP? Tongue

I wouldn't necessarily say their "medicine". The do come in handy at times. But, (IMO) they're better used on an individual track than using on the entire mix, and.... a little goes a long ways. FWIW, Ozone's exciter is nice, but I (personally) prefer BBE's Sonic Maximizer when I'm looking to "excite" something. Shy

The key phrase is "a little goes a long way". It's actually better to use too little than too much with an exciter. I don't know if I'd use it a lot on individual tracks ... it'd be too easy to overuse it that way. I prefer to use it on the mix, and occasionally to go back into the mix and apply it on a track. Again, eventhough it sounds great don't overdo it. An over excited track is very fatiguing.

Craig is right on here. It IS easy to overdo things. People develope their own "way" of working with various aspects. I (personally) like using it on individual tracks. To each his/her own!!

I bought the BBE plug-in because I had good experience using them live. I have been very pleased with it! I'm with Voodoo in that I rarely use it on the mix and when I do, I just use a VERY little. I don't find it to be very flattering to vocals, and since they are so predominant in the mix, I don't like to risk it. The BBE can be very nice on drums and guitars and even bass sometimes. It doesn't do much for my keyboard, but if I were recording a real piano I could imagine using a bit of BBE to add some sparkle. Like everyone says, though, don't overdo it. It may sound pleasing through your studio monitors, but when you listen to it in your car or somewhere else the highs can be overwhelming! The key with enhancement effects (in my opinion) is to keep them subtle enough that most people don't notice them. You want the song to sound natural (usually), so you want to hide the effects as much as possible.

Well, there's my 2¢!

Josh

I use the BBE mostly on drums/cymbals. I sometimes use it on acoustic guitars, (mostly Nashville strung 12 sting) and the occasional percussive instrument (tamborine, cavasa, vibro-slang, triangle kinda things). Shy

I use ozone's exciter most on drums, not the cymbals. I think they start to sound too harsh. Even with a little excitement. I like to EQ the cymbals in the first place (if necessary).

But the toms and especially the snare work with some excitement. Depending on the material of course...
