I answered DAT when I actually use an Alesis ADAT. I have done (years ago) field recordings with an TEAC 3440. As for equipment, I have a custom built "snake" that serves as a splitter and will sometimes pull "directs" off the FOH. And... at times put up my own mics and get my own mix. If the FOH Engineer is competent, I'll almost always take the "easy" route and pull directs.

By jam session, I assume you mean band practice? If that's the case, than cassette, naturally. It's cheap and easy, and good enough. If you mean a gathering of musicians to get together and actually jam, well then I use whatever is being used at the venue. It's not up to me.
I voted cassette, assuming the assumptions.

I've actually been paid to both record and run sound for bands that.... I swore had to be practicing (although they were on a stage in a club). They sucked!!

Not surprising. I've been in bands that have had practices in clubs/bars, and the first few did suck. Everyone's drunk anyway, and it allows us to practice both our songs, and our shows. We usually do this under a false name, however.

Of course you practice on the gigs.
Having rehearsals merely means there's more to remember.

Just a cassette recorder....put it on the ground, push rec and then play!

Comments on brands and microphone types are welcome. |
Donīt waste your time (and brain) use the most simple equipment, a cassette recorder, versatile, portable, everywhere find equipment to record and reproduce it.

I think I'd go along with that. In fact, I answered DAT, since it is the only portable recorder I have. However, if performance, rather than quality, is the prime issue, a cassette is probably the easiest to use.

I have to agree with Graeme here..... with a little different angle. You use what you have. Sure, if cassette is all you've got then you choice is made for you. However, if I had the option of DAT (I answered ADAT), I would take that anyday over a cassette recording.

ADAT: Every once in a while something good happens at a jam and it's nice to capture it all well, on seperate tracks as far as can be arranged, just in case...

I use a 45 dollar ghetto blaster with the condenser mic. I swear they make better recordings than an expensive cassette deck.
