Hi! I'm just getting familiar with working with the Dynamics Processing effect and there are a lot more controls than on a traditional compressor.
There are two sets of attack and decay settings - is this to closer match signal-measurement time to attack/decay time - and so should they be set to some basic ratio respectively as they vary? How do they relate to traditional compressors with only one set of attack/decay controls?
I'm trying to get a traditional 'punch' on tracks. Will the Dynamics Processor do as well as or better than mainstream products for this purpose?
Is it, or will it be possible to visually monitor gain reduction? How about including the real time gain reduction right in the graph, using a few pixels?
I would find this very useful once the attack and decay times get high, at which point the gain reduction is not a direct function of the graph.
Cheers!

I can see that parts of your question require regular-user input (not me, I don't use compression), but the earlier part is perhaps hard to explain in any less words than are contained in the product help file - hopefully you've checked it through carefully, as it's pretty comprehensive on the function of each control.

From the online 'knowledge base' -

| Limiting/Ceiling:: Make it loud. That's what everybody wants. With the hard limiter, you can set the "Limit Max Amplitude" to -.5dB. Use the 'Boost Input By' to really drive your signal. Be careful not to drive it too hard, as you will start to hear audible artifacts, though they are sometimes pretty cool effects. You can also use a simple compressor from within the Dynamics Processing menu. A compressor preset with a ratio of 2:1 is pretty standard for giving a mix 'punch.' Typically, you would not exceed a 3:1 ratio. |

I had a go at explaining how it works in this thread a while back. Please ignore the references to 'preset sharing' - it was just an attempt to hoist me by my own petard! The demonstration files are still there, so you can still try the experiment.
