I want to make dance music, but don't know where to begin. I have no previous experience with music composition, save for mucking around with ejay and related software packages. I know what I want to hear, that is I have tunes and melodies in mind, but don't know how to make them in reality. Can anybody offer some tips, advice, possibly links on how to begin. I know CEP would come in handy, at the moment, I use it to polish up vinyl transfers.

If you have your "tunes and melodies in mind" then just step at the piano (or any other musical instrument) and try to find right keys for them.
Next step would be learning how to program a sequencer. (Creating rhythm tracks for dance music shouldn't be problem at all).
Then you may want to learn how to convert midi files to audio...
Then try to do a search on mixing.
And finally (if you're still reading this) why not to delve into mastering? Wink That would be it.
Appropriate links can be easily found executing "search".

Not my speciality at all...particularly not dance music...but when I need a sequencer I use Cakewalk Sonar which seems to be pretty common. Prior to getting Sonar I had another Cakewalk product (Pro Audio V.9) and have hear good things about something called "Fruity Loops" though I've never played with it.

mmmhhh....

First, you can use pitch transformations in order to

-adjust length of a sound without modifying its frequency
--->useful for creating drum lines

-adjust tone of a musical sound without modifying its length

---->usful for creating melodies

you have too a "music option" where you create a parition from a sound. just be careful of tempo...

Let's begin.

Well... here goes... the dreaded "First Post"... I was in your shoes a few years back. First off, what are you using to make music with? (dubs from CD's, tape, licorice pizza or do you have synths and such) There are many products out there that can assist you in getting the music out of your head and onto a CD. If you have some music background a good keyboard workstation is a great way to start. I don't mean the toys that you can get from K-mart or best buy (i.e. NO casio) get a real synth (Roland/Korg etc) and start from there. If not, something like a Roland MC-505 might help... Key is lets everyone know what you have to work with...
