Hello, I was wondering if it's normal not to hear your input signal while adjusting your input level ? I hear the input level once I begin the recording process. Is this program one of those deals where your have to monitor the signal going in befor the computer input? I use the Mackie 1202VLZ for guitar input, I run the Alt 3/4 to the input of a Audiophile 2496. I can hear the signal going in if I assign the alt3/4 to the cue section of the mixer but I'd rather monitor the signal through the software. Thanx. Wizzo

I'd say that you answered your own question. Even the software that appears to monitor 'through' is pretty much bound to be faking it. CEP uses the Windows functions to record, and that means that you have to go with whatever functions the internal mixer, or any app that replaces it, give you. Since CEP is actually quite capable of recording multiple inputs, the last thing it needs to be burdened with is having to sort out multiple monitoring as well - the idea is to dedicate the machine to the recording task alone. And quite frankly, what CEP does operationally in this situation is what a professional multitrack tape recorder does - only with the monitoring switching being effectively external to the machine.

Since CEP makes a very effective multi-input recording application, the last thing it needs to be doing is having to sort out monitoring, which is a function best controlled externally anyway. The potential for clashing with the soundcard settings with unpredictable results is also quite considerable under those circumstances, I think!

SteveG's covered it pretty thoroughly.

The only thing which I would like to add is something which I have pointed out before in this forum - there is no equivalent to 'off- tape' monitoring when you are recording direct to disc. If you bear that fact in mind, then the reasoning behind what he is saying becomes a lot more clear.

The corollary of this is that, if you want to monitor, you have to monitor an input anyway and as SteveG has already said, this is a lot easier to do externally than in software on the computer.

Since you already have a hardware mixer, why make things more difficult than they need to be? It seems to me you would be best employing it in the way intended by the manufacturer and use the auxiliary to provide you with monitoring facilities.

Hey Steve and Graeme,

I would like to thank you both for responding to my question. I guess your right , I did answer my own question. You did teach me somthing though, I do see your point on not making it any harder on your machine !! I have been really caught up in the whole VST instrument thing and all the technical stuff about using it in real time, I guess I just need to get back to the original Tascam 424 Days!! Your help is much appreciated and Thanks again.
