Hey all,
Another newbie question....is it possible to take a rough-cut DAT recorded from a studio, and seperate the tracks to multi track in CE? I do recording on the side and I'm in the process of starting my own studio. Part of my services include mastering...but I haven't "mastered" the technicalities of previously recorded material from DAT........

Hello Dan. Well, seeing as DAT is a two-track stereo format, I'm not really certain what you mean by 'separate the tracks in multitrack'. Certainly, you can separate the L/R channels onto different tracks (by clicking on the red "1" in the channel strip, track 1, selecting "Left Channel", then going to the red "1" in track 2, and selecting "Right Channel". But other than that, there is no way to separate parts from a stereo mix.
As far as mastering goes, it's a pretty standard practice to have recordings mixed down to DAT and then to transfer the DAT into the computer to do all the post-production, PMCD mastering. WE have an FAQ which gives some tips on how to begin...

Actually, what I meant was I have a DAT...the drums are on 8 tracks, guitar is 2 tracks, bass is 1 track, and 2 vocal tracks. But all tracks are recorded stereo. I want to be able to take each track individually and put them one track at a time to CE, know what I mean?

You are obviously referring to 'ADAT' yes? That is not the same thing as a 'DAT'. In any event, with the proper soundcard, you could digitally transfer each track from the ADAT into Cool Edit, optically, or with a multi-input soundcard, you could do this through A/D conversion as well. Even if you don't have a multi-input or Optical soundcard, you can transfer individual tracks, but would have the greatest success if you could provide some type of SMPTE sync (or ADAT sync via Optical/9-pin) for Cool EDit to chase.

Yes, you are correct. I currently do not have an ADAT, but I do have the soundcard capabilities to do so via optical. Looks like I need to do some shopping this weekend!
Thanks Syntrillium Support!

I think he might be referring to the Fostex multitrack decks - but we'll have to ask him for that verification - they are the only digital eight track tape machine other than ADAT that I know of, anyway...
All the best... -Jon

Actually, I do have the Fostex VF-16, 16-track digital mixer...and it does have optical in and out for ADAT and other applications. I use the Lexicon Core2 desktop hardware and PCI card, which does have optical in and out....so, will that allow me to take what I record to the VF-16 and send it via optical to CEP?

Absolutely! When rcording your digital ADAT stream, select one track to record the left channel of ADAT pair 1-2, andother to record the right channel of ADAT pair 1-2 and so on until you have 8 channels set up. This is done in the Multitrack View, and you have to click on the Recording Device (loweer number icon per channel) to set this up. You will also want to go to the Device List under Recording Device to make sure that you have the ADAT pairs listed individually.
