Sorry for the long post, but I feel a little overwhelmed right now. I also feel very inadequate after reading the postings in this forum. I mean I am a pretty technical guy (I make money from software development), but I obviously don't know squat about digital audio editing since I can barely follow most of the entries here.
I have used CE for several versions to perform simple edits on WAV and MP3 files, but now I am focused on transferring my out of print and rare LPs to CD. I am not an audiophile, I doubt that I could distinguish a good recording from a great recording (I think I went deaf from attending too many Who concerts) so I am just looking for credible recordings.
I have found that there is way more required to pull this off than I had originally expected. I would love to read a "Cool Edit for Dummies" book, but unless I am wrong nothing even close appears to exist. If anyone has any recomeendations I will take them and disappear while I read.
My main question is general and simple -- can anyone give me (or point me to) the important steps for creating decent CDs from LPs?
I have a nice Technics 1600 turntable which I decided might be best connected directly to my Dell Latitude laptop sound card (a poor piece of hardware for this I am sure), but would I be better off going through my amplifier for any reason?
Finally, I have also found that I cannot monitor my recording while using the microphone input, but I could when using the other input. I have read that there may be some setting on my sound card for doing this, but I can't find that particular switch if it exists. Any ideas on that?

On the turntable, the output of the cartridge is too low to, to go directly into the sound card. Plus the phono pre-amp does the RIAA eq. What I do is go into my pre-amp (carver) and I use the tape outputs to go into my sound card.
