Hi,
I have been trying out both COOL EDIT PRO and also SOnic Foundry VEGAS

I have tried Cool Edit Pro for some time and really miss two things that VEGAS and many other programs have in multitracking
Is there a way to do these things simply

1.
I have a PART of a wav file in multitrack
I want to extend it to include more of the file at one end
In vegas and others I just drag the end of the file
Is there a way to do this in cool PRO
We use this a lot for PRODUCTION etc at our RADIO station
I know I can highlight further SELECT FILE etc but this is messy and slow

2.
MULTI SLECTION in MULTI TRACK VIEW
We are doing up to 6 diferent versions of a production along a timeline
Sometimes we just want to select 1 of these SIX and then move it
This is very tedious to select LARGE and small portions and not miss any
No we cannot select a whole track because that will select all 6 productions at once
Re VEGAS again - they have a tool to multi select

Both these two issues are MAJOR TIME SAVERS FOR US in PRODUCTION

3.
Finally
We have had many many lock ups with COOL EDIT PRO when trying to save or open a file
It locks up on the File OPEN Dialog box
This happens on the network quite a lot.....but also on the single user computer
Is this a known problem

Hmmm, I have had none of these problems in Cool Edit Pro.

Beetle,
POINT 3 was a PROBLEM
POINTS 1 and 2 are questions regarding the best way to do certain things in COOL PRO

HI AJH,

1. You can do this in CEP. But it's a little different. Hold the shift key down, Right click on the waveform and drag the newly created image to the end of the current waveform. Now you have a duplicate of the first one. Highlight the portion you don't want and press Del on your keyboard. If you need dozens of this duplicated waveform, you can right click on your first file, select Loop Duplicate and create as many copies of the waveform as you wish.

2. I must admit I'm not an expert Vegas users and don't know what you mean. But it sound like you are talking about "Punch-In". This feature allows you to highlight a section of a file or the whole file and do multiple takes. It keeps the take history. After you are all done, you can select the take you like and delete all the other takes.

3. Hmmmmm. You must have the full version of CEP and not the DEMO because the DEMO version won't let you save!!! So lets assume you have the full version. This is a problem with your network. In CEP 1.2, when you go to save your files, it lists the free space in all the network HDs. If you have a bad network connection, it may take a long time for other PCs to respond and it may appear that CEP is frozen. Next time that this happens, wait 1 minute (count to 60), and CEP will unfreeze itself when it gets answer from all network HDs. We have disabled this feature in CEP 1.2a, so you should download and install 1.2a update to correct this problem.

WOW thanks for the reply Syntrillium
Re. POINT 1
I really think this is a big disadvantage for PRODUCTION USERS LIKE US who often need to grab only part of a file then maybe extend the length simply

POINT 2
Sorry for the confusion
I wonder if there is an easy way to multiple select ALL the files in multitrck in a specific AREA....
AS I said we may have 6 similar PRODUCTIONS along a multitrack
They may have 10 tracks used along a 5 minute length - EACH PRODUCTION PIECE BEING say 30 seconds in total then a gap then another version then a gap etc etc
Sometimes we want to select say all of VERSION 2 in the Multitrack view and move it or extend a music bed underneath
To do this seems tedious as we have to go in and ctrl pick all individual wav files in each track
VEGAS has like a dooted selection window tool that multiple selectes any wav that you cross over
I am asking whether COO PRO CAN or even WILL IN FUTURE support these two types of issues
They are very important to us in Radio Production

Maybe:
Left click a track, and drag while further on left clicking the mouse pointer over the other tracks.
All tracks which will be touched become highlighted.
You may splice and group them or so ...

This has been a problem for me too. I mentioned it to the Syntrillium rep at the AES show 18 months ago and he agreed that it would be a useful feature to have.

To get around this in the edit view I tend to select more than I end up needing and use the splice command to trim it in the multitrack view.

Cheers.

James.

Syntrillium Support:

One of us is missing the point of his questions 1 and 2.

1. I think he wants to extend the wave - i.e. adjust boundaries. To extend the end of the wave, or "out point", click at the start of the wave, drag to the end and beyond as much as you need (selecting time as you go), right click the wave and select "adjust boundaries".

Start at the end of the wave instead to adjust the beginning.

2. I think he just wants multiple clips to be selected. Some of these clips are large, and some are small. If he zooms out and uses ctrl-click, he misses the small ones, but if he zooms in, he has to scroll too much. I'd like to have an easier way to do this, too - but I haven't found it either. If I were doing what he describes, I'd probably do it on different tracks, so I could select the whole track. Doesn't cost any more to use up those tracks ;-)

3. I do not see this problem. CEP (1.2a - get the free upgrade if you're running 1.2) has been very solid for me.

Good day fellow cepheads.
I have one thing to say regarding the debate of vegas vs. cep. The automatic crossfading in vegas is extremely handy and cuts down on mixing time. Although it is not a big issue, it would be nice is cep had this option as well. Maybe in version 2.0?

I don't know Vegas, but what does its automatic crossfade do that CEP doesn't? I'm not looking at CEP right now, but I've got mine set up in the options to crossfade all edits, and the crossfade time is even selectable.
