The Discussion pertains to Defragmention of Hard drives. (Not Ram Disks)

Questions?
How often should we do it?
Having 1 large wav file that is fragmented can make the disk defrag tool report that 30% of you drive is fragmented.

Is the Speed benifit noticable if we do it more that once a month?

How much better is SCCI that IDE/33/66/100?

Are that any special setting when we Defrag that we should set?

Does CEP have any setting that can place files in more efficient parts of the Hard Disk?

Disk defrag can help if you are seeing symptoms of disk slowdown. I can be a slow process on large drives with a lot of data, at least when using the built-in windows tools. It may be much faster (if you have the space) to copy the files to another drive, delete the stuff on your drive, then copy the file back to the drive. Maybe a nice idea to defrag at the start of any new project, when content on the drive is minimal.

Depending on your systame and what you are doing, you may never see a slowdown due to fragmented drives. But doing video streams, or dealing with many audio files at the same time may cause fragmentation to show.

By SCCI do you mean SCSI? There are several flavors of SCSI, each with different speed; e.g., 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and now 160 mbps. On my system SCSI 40 (e.g., SCSI Ultra Wide) is much faster than an IDE 33, not quite as fast as (characteristics of the drives too.

I have one drive with two partitions. I hava Cool Edit on the C drive and put most of my music on D drive.

I use Norton Systemworks for defragging as it works better and MUCH faster.

I defrag my D drive after every other project or so.

I am working with one drive only. I defrag the drive now and then but never when my work with CE is not completed as Cd burned, listened and agreed that the copy is satisfactory.
