My HiFi system doesn't have a "line out" connection for recording cassette tapes and vinyl Lps onto my PC via the "line in" port on my sound card.

I have tried connecting the headphone socket on my HiFi to my sound card and it seems to work very well.

Is it OK to do this or could it cause any problems for me, and if so, is there any other method that I can use.

My amplifyer can accommodate 2 tape machines, with phono plugs for in and out. I am only using one tape at the moment, so... could the other one be used to provide a line out from my HiFi to my sound card.

If your amplifier has provisions for two tape decks to be hooked up you probably should be able to use one of those tape outs for going into your soundcard as the headphone jack is not the best way to go.

Most of the times a headphone out socket, is just cheap circuity. So, you should do some 'hacking' in your system. You dhould find a pre-amp output, on-board, and 'steal' audio from there. You should try to find the part of the system where pre-amplified audio goes to the power amplifier. This should be done with caution, with the help of some electronics service-man or expert.

Eugene, you should use the amplifier's tape output for you recording purposes. This output is, in principle, matching the soundcard input regarding the level and impedance while the headphone plug doesn't.

The unused tape out sounds like the best bet. Use good cables. The head phone jack coul dbe something as simple as a tap from the final output power amplifiers and may not be as clean and neat a signal as the tape out.

Thank you one and all, I think I had better stop using the headphone socket and get some cables to come from the tape out phonos
