I know there has been some discussion about problems with ripping CD tracks, and there are two possible reasons so far as I know.  ShawnD just posted a tip on the Adobe forum which prompted my post here.  For both links, you will need to log onto the Adobe AA forum.

One solution -   Adobe Audition ASPI Driver patch

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2517

Another solution - letting other than System Administrator rip files

I will quote ShawnD.  Forum Administrators remove this if it is deemed not appropriate to quote.

Yes, Audition is using the Windows SPTI functions to access the drive. There are some CD access problems in Windows XP with non-administrative accounts. So if you want to use SPTI in a user account, follow these steps:

(You must be logged in as an administrator to do this)
1. Go to Start>Run and type "mmc" and click OK
2. Click File>Add/Remove Snap-In
3. Click the Add Button
4. Select the "Group Policy Object Editor" and click Add, then click Finish, Close, and then OK.
5. Now, click the + next to "Local Computer Policy", followed by "Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>Security Options.
6. With Security Options selected, on the right side of the window, scroll down until you find "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only" Double click on it.
7. It should be disabled by default. Enable it.
8. No need to reboot, when quitting MMC, no need to save.

Now non-administrators should be able to access the CD without restrictions if Audition is set under Options>Settings>System>CD Device Options>SPTI.

Good idea to raise that here, bonnder - it's an old chestnut, that problem!

That's fine - I quoted Shawn myself the other day. For anybody who's not aware, he's a member of the Audition development team. If he says things, he's a) almost bound to be correct and b) got the inside track on everything!

He's also a member of this forum, so if he objects to being quoted, he can say so himself, but I don't think he will. In general, it's okay to quote people in this sort of context as long as you acknowledge the source and author. I think that we established ages ago that once you've made it public on a forum, then public it is, unless we are specifically asked to remove something, or one of us has identified a potential problem with it.

Yes, a few people are aware of this, although he seems to keep the fact pretty quiet.  Cool

I'm going to make an almighty presumption here, and if he wants me to remove this, or he wants to contradict it, that's fine (if he sees it at all, that is).

I'm pretty sure that the reason Shawn remains fairly quiet about his job is that forum participation isn't exactly a core occupation for Adobe employees. So whilst it's fine to mention this here (where he is effectively a private member), I certainly wouldn't presume to mention it at all on the Adobe forum. Adobe's take on this appears (quite reasonably) to be that they provide telephone support for their products, and therefore the staff not directly involved in this don't need to do so - if you follow my drift.

Now, it may well be that part of Shawn's remit is to keep an eye on the forums - after all, Adobe know that they can learn quite a bit from them - but my take on this here is that it's almost better that people know - then we don't get people having silly arguments about how definitive anything he says about Audition is. Not that I think he's likely to say much - his present post count here is zero.

... where I've taken quiet steps from time to time to cover his identity lest his position should become difficult and we lose his contributions.  So - shhh, please...

Ha ha, you have discovered my secret identity!  That's fine to talk about it here, but please make sure not to mention it on the actual Adobe forums.  I am not allowed to officially have a presence there other than as a regular user.  It's always a good idea for us to monitor the forums, becasue it is an excellent place to see what is going on with the product. There might even be one or two more of us on the Audition Dev. team on those forums, but I'll never tell!  wink

Well, in one case you don't have to. It's a matter of very public knowledge that The Creator is a member (and no pseudonym either)... he even posts occasionally.

They are the ones who answer the questions as if they know what they are talking about, rather than those like me who put "I think that..." or "Maybe if you...." or "Well, now you've got me stumped".
